Three arrested after W. Philly car chase

Three men were arrested following a car chase through West Philadelphia that left an officer from the 19th District hospitalized in stable condition Wednesday night.

Lt. John Walker, of the Southwest Detective Division, gave this account:

Around 6:40 p.m., police tried stopping a black, 2010 Dodge Charger on 52nd Street near Delancey that was reported stolen.

When officers approached the car, it sped away and eventually hit a police cruiser on 57th Street near Race.

An officer inside the car was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with neck and back pain, and was in stable condition as of 9 p.m.

The stolen Charger then hit an unmarked car and ran into a curb, flattening one of its tires.

The 21-year-old driver and two other men, ages 22 and 23, jumped out of the car and ran in different directions. Police chased them down and recovered two guns.

One suspect was arrested on 56th Street near Arch, another was taken down on Frazier Street near Arch and the third was arrested on 57th Street near Appletree.

The men were being walked into the Southwest Detective Division around 9:15 p.m., and will likely face charges of assaulting a police officer, fleeing and eluding police, and weapons violations.

Charges for the initial carjacking, which happened on Markoe Street near Meredith Tuesday night, were pending.
