Teen shot during after school brawl

POSTED: Thursday, September 22, 2011, 10:04 PM

A student at West Philadelphia High School was shot in his forearm during a large fight outside the school Thursday around 4:20 p.m.

Police watched surveillance footage of the incident, which showed a crowd of between 40 and 50 teens — most in their school uniforms — fighting on 51st street near Walnut after classes were dismissed, Lt. John Walker, of the Southwest Detective Division said.

It was unclear who fired the shot, or what circumstances led up to the fight, he said.

The 15-year-old boy was taken by his mother to Mercy Hospital, and was later transferred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Walker said the boy was listed in stable condition as of 9 p.m.

Police said the boy was initially not cooperating with police who tried interviewing him, but became more helpful later Thursday evening.

No arrests were made.

You know they're just stressed out about college kids moving into their neighborhood. I think if we just removed all the college kids from the city, these sort of things would stop.

The lead question should be where does a underage person purchase a weapon in the city of Philadelphia. We have to many armed teenagers walking around with illegal guns that just seem to appear out of nowhere.

So these are the kids that Nutter had us support with his newest tax increase? I want my 9.9% property tax back. I mean c'mon man, 53 Mill for kids to beat & shot one another? You're better off sending that 53 Mill to the corrections dept. (Cause a lot of these kids are ending up there one way or another anyway)

At least the children were in uniforms!...The Promise Academies are working!...Or is this a Renaissance school? Whatever fancy shmancy name, there still seems to be similar problems? What could it be?

This is the product of today's society. Parents that do not care what their children are doing and bring them up to be the bullies and thugs that they are. If you are under the age of 18 and you get arrested your parent should get arrested as well. Lets stop putting money into a school system where the children in that system do not even care to get an education and lets build bigger prisons to hold the thugs and their moms (and some dads if they know who their dad is)

@cozlooby. Many parents do care about their child. Stop putting all them in the same category because of a few bad apples. I am really sick of your people on here. You don't know any of these inner city parents More than half care about their child and want try to raise them right. Just like white kids there are bad apples and some times kids do bad things. But let me guess if your a young black kid in philly white people think your a thug and don't want to learn or do the right thing and all we should do is put them in jail.

    You people are so judgmental.

You are so wrong. You don't know anything about our culture. You think you know because of the negative image that is painted about us on the news and in the movies. If you people would stop being so fast to put us all in the same category. Get to know some of us. You would see we are hard working people who want the same thing you want. We want a safe place for a kids to grow up.I'm sure the white community has some bad kids also. You don't see blacks saying all whites are the same. We have bad white, black Asian, and hispanic people in this world. Your too much of a ignorant racist to understand that. You make yourself very dumb when you talk about a culture you know nothing about.

Just like i told HidingUnderMyBed don't speak on something you don't know. You see one very small part of some blacks let me say that again some blacks. Your not in their house. You don't know what they do. So how the hell could you know what affection they don't show their child???? I have seen many whites in public yell and slap their child in PUBLIC. I bet you don't see that? Yelling does not mean your child will grow up violent. You sound very stupid. Listen to yourself. Just like i can't say for sure that some white parents show a lot of affection or not. I don't live in there home so how could i make that statement for sure??? Think before you talk.

phillyguy215, I am an inner city parent and it is my culture I am speaking about and all other cultures. Not one race is excluded in what I am talking about. As a parent of 2 children that lives in the city of Phila. I know at all times where my children are and always will know. I watch everyday as absent parents let their children come and go with no regard or respect for anyone or anything. You are right not all children are bad but there are certainly more bad then good these days. You are the reason that there is still racism today as not one thing in what I wrote mentioned race or culture. YOU DID and you give all of our culture a bad name

I'm shocked that students in school uniforms should behave in such a manner. I thought school uniforms were the answer to all our problems in public schools.

If the govt. can slow down the gun shows then the gun runners won`t have such a large supplies of weapons to sell to the suburbs gun runners who in turn sell to the inners cities. That`s how the guns come to over run the streets in all the big cities,it`s a known fact that there are not many (you can count on one hand) gun shops in the inner city. THINK ABOUT IT!!
