Romantic rival nabbed in stab slaying

Police arrested a man yesterday who they say broke into the East Germantown home of a woman he fancied, slashed her in the face and then stabbed her boyfriend to death Monday morning.

Gentlemen, this is no way to woo your woman.

Police arrested a man yesterday who they say broke into the East Germantown home of a woman he fancied, slashed her in the face and then stabbed her boyfriend to death Monday morning.

Varnado Jones, 54, was a "wannabe boyfriend" motivated by romantic jealousy in the 6:25 a.m. bedroom attack on James Prince, 33, and his 32-year-old girlfriend, homicide Sgt. Frank Hayes said. Prince died at Albert Einstein Medical Center shortly after the ambush in the home on Nelson Street near Locust; his girlfriend was treated and released for her injuries.

Police had been seeking Jones, of 21st Street near Medary Avenue, since the attack; he turned himself in without incident yesterday, Hayes said. He is being held without bail on murder, burglary and related charges.
