Virginia Hill, 69, who retired in 2002 after 24 years on the Philadelphia Police Department, was found injured about 5:30 a.m. Saturday in her home in Suffolk, Va. She died shortly after at a nearby hospital.

Hill joined the Philly police force in 1978 and spent most of her time here helping troubled children. In 1981, she began working in the department's Juvenile Aid Division and moved in 1989 to the missing-persons unit, where she specialized in juvenile and long-term unsolved cases.

Hill was named Officer of the Month by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund in January 2002.
