A 49-year-old man was severely injured this morning after he got hit by a train at the Broad Street Line's Walnut-Locust station.

The incident happened at 11:30 a.m. on the southbound local tracks, said Manny Smith, a SEPTA spokesman. Paramedics rushed the man to the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital; his condition is unknown. Smith couldn't confirm reports that the man's feet were amputated below the ankles.

"We don't know if he fell or jumped," Smith said. "We don't really know yet why he was in the track area. That remains under investigation at the moment."

Service was delayed southbound for more than 20 minutes, Smith said.
