A 51-year-old man died after being shot in his chest on Somerset Street near Water Street in Kensington Wednesday night, police said.

Shots rang out just after 7 p.m. and the man was wounded once in the left side of his chest, said Officer Tanya Little, a police department spokeswoman.

The victim was taken by police to Temple University Hospital and was listed in extremely critical condition, said Chief Inspector Scott Small. The man was unconscious after the shooting and was pronounced dead at 9:16 p.m.

Police found a single .22-caliber shell casing and the victim’s blood on the scene.

There were no witnesses and a description of the suspect was not immediately available.
