Gunman opens fire on teen mom in W. Philly

A careless gunman opened fire on a group of teens in West Philly Tuesday night, wounding, among others, a 19-year-old woman carrying her two daughters, police said.

The incident happened about 10:30 p.m. on 46th Street near Market, according to Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives.

A group of young adults had just exited the rear stairwell of a housing project and were walking down Market Street when a blue sedan pulled up to them, Walker said. One of the vehicle's occupants rolled down the window and started firing, scattering the group.

Three people were ultimately hit: a 17-year-old boy struck in his right calf, a 19-year-old woman struck in her left leg and right foot, and a 16-year-old girl struck in her right foot, Walker said.

At the time of the shooting, the 19-year-old was carrying her 6-month-old daughter in her arms and pushing her 1-year-old daughter in a stroller. During the chaos, the mother was able to push the children out of harm's way, Walker said.

Police believe the gunfire was rooted in an ongoing argument between residents of that housing project and a second group from the area near 49th Street and Fairmount Avenue, Walker said.

All three victims were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where they remain tonight in stable condition.

Investigators have little description on the suspects or their vehicle, which was last seen heading west on Market Street, Walker said.
