Cops: Homicide suspect shot by police in Strawberry Mansion

A 27-year-old homicide suspect was hospitalized in critical but stable condition after he was shot by police during a car stop in Strawberry Mansion, police said.

Two uniformed officers riding in a 22nd district patrol car stopped Maceo Emerson Waring IV, of Kingsessing, on Oxford Street near 32nd around 2:50 p.m. to question him for motor vehicle violations, police said.

Waring handed his identification to the officers, who returned to their car to run his information through the department's computer system, said Lt. Ray Evers, a police department spokesman.

"Radio tells them to use extreme caution because the male is wanted for a homicide," Evers said. Waring was wanted for slaying Naeem Giles, 24, on Horrocks Street near Oxford in Northwood on Sept. 10.

Cops returned to Waring's car and asked him to step out of it, Evers said. As he got out of the car, he reached for an officer's gun and started removing it from its holster, Evers said.

"The other officer sees it and fired two times striking the man," he said, adding that the other officer also fired a single shot.

Waring, of Paxon Street near Springfield Avenue was wounded in his back, left hip and left shoulder and was taken to Temple University Hospital, police said. The man has a criminal history that includes multiple arrests dating back to 2002, according to court documents.

The officers sustained minor injuries in the scuffle, but were not hospitalized, Evers said.
