Cop wounds robber in SW Philly

A Philadelphia police officer shot an armed robber in a Southwest Philly shopping center about 6:30 tonight.

A Philadelphia police officer shot an armed robber in a Southwest Philly shopping center about 6:30 tonight.

Police spokesman Lt. Ray Evers said the suspect robbed two people and tried to rob a third as he rode a bike through Penrose Plaza, at Island Avenue and Lindbergh Boulevard. Two officers who happened to be at a nearby store confronted the crook, who jumped off his bike and pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the officers, Evers said.

One cop opened fire, wounding the suspect in the knee and ankle. He was admitted to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in stable condition. Investigators later determined that the man had been armed with a BB gun that closely resembled a firearm, Evers said.
