Humberto Cervantes, accused in kid rape

This post has been updated.

A church deacon has been arrested for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl in a Bensalem motel.

Humberto Cervantes, 34, of Coatesville, was a deacon at a Pentecostal church in Trenton when he befriended the girl in 2011, according to Bensalem police. They met several times in parks in Bensalem, where they "talked about church, life and family," police said. On their final meeting, the girl thought they were going to a park again, but instead, Cervantes took her to a motel and allegedly raped her, police said. She told police about the alleged incident in December.

When Bensalem and Chester County Detectives tried to arrest him at his workplace in Malvern, he fled in a car, but police tracked him down and arrested him without further incident on Wednesday, police said. Magisterial Judge Leonard Brown jailed him on $1 million bail.

Cervantes, who left the church in Trenton shortly after the alleged rape, had at one point been a deacon at Apostolic Assembly of Faith Jesus Christ, at Ontario and Front streets in North Philadelphia, police said. The church didn't immediately return a call for comment.

I can't comment on this situation since I don't know the specifics, but people are way too trusting of people they think are religious. Remember the inmate that "found GOD" and was pardoned by Huckabee who went on to kill. Or all the catholic priests. And of course when this happens they
pull out the "No a true Scottsman" fallacy. I've also seen a few people get straight up ripped off by people that play the religious card.

on another note, its time to stop giving churches exemptions from taxes. They are businesses plain and simple that specialize in Performance Art.

tom806, agree completely about not giving tax exemptions to churches (or religious institutions). It's ridiculous. If people want to give their money to a church, that is their prerogative, but the taxpayer should not have to foot the bill for this nonsense.

Why are people assuming that he's an immigrant? He can't be deported if he was born here, or if he's a citizen.

tom806- Tax exemption keeps the government out of church finances, therefore upholding the separation of church and state. This was upheld on May 4, 1970 via Supreme Court ruling. Churches also commonly provide social services that relieve some of the burden of government. My neighborhood church, as an example, has a housing program for seniors and a program for feeding the homeless. There are many secular charities that are also tax exempt, and the pay off is more than worth it, or so says the IRS, Supreme Court, and over 200 years of US history.

Well, the good thing is, he has accepted Jesus into his heart and asked for forgiveness and truly repented, knowing how badly he ruined her young life, ability to trust authority figures and will probably lead to depression and untold nightmares in her adult life. He deserves eternal life in heaven. The young lady however, because no god came to her rescue, will probably reject all notions of god, and therefore will never accept Jesus into her heart. For that, she will suffer eternal damnation in the fiery depths of hell. I love religion!

Zero- No need to single out "rowhouse basement churches" as trash. I realize you have an agenda to pursue, but be honest with yourself. Religion and scandal goes hand-in-hand and if you have to differentiate "rowhouse basement churches" from "legitimate looking churches that are just as shady as rowhouse basement churches" then you're biased either because you are ignorant or your agenda is to protect "legitimate looking churches that are just as shady as rowhouse basement churches". Either way it's ignorant and shows an overall lack of understanding about the world around you. That, in turn, is pathetic.

in your case, perhaps calling someone ignorant is an act of ignorance itself. but please continue to preach your trivially enlightened perspective. by the way, apparently you've never been to front and ontario...

It is OK. Let people think that one church is better than the other. It is those people who get shocked years later when little Johnny comes home talking about how the priest was pole dancing after service.
