A man who was being pursued by police in Chester this morning drove into the prison gates at the State Correctional Institute at Chester and was shot by police, according to a spokeswoman for the Delaware County District Attorney's Office.

The pursuit eventually ended with the suspect's apprehension outside of the Boeing plant in Ridley Park.

Emily Harris, D.A. spokeswoman, said the pursuit started at 12th Street near Melrose Avenue in Chester when police tried to stop a man who was believed to have been involved in drug activity. The man fled police and then - for inexplicable reasons - drove into the prison gate.

As he tried to evade police officers, he actually drove towards them, causing cops to fire their weapons, Harris said.

The suspect was hit somewhere on his body by gunfire - it's still unclear where - but he continued fleeing officers and drove to the Boeing plant on Route 291 near Stewart Avenue, where he was taken into custody.

No injuries were reported to any officers. The suspect has been hospitalized, but his condition and name have not been released.
