Hoagie makers - new and old - to work for free for sick boy
This Saturday, Delconians will come together again for Brayden. Primos Hoagies on Baltimore Pike in Springfield will donate all of the proceeds the store pulls in that day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Yesterday, I lamented that Delaware County was the only Philly suburb not mentioned in this story on where the wealthiest of the region live.
Delco often gets painted as the blue-collar suburb but what it lacks in wealth it makes up for in heart. Remember this story about how Delco cops led a massive police escort for Brayden Chandler, a 3-year-old Springfield boy who is battling terminal kidney tumors?
That showed Delco has a wealth of people who give a damn, and that's more important than any dollar figure.
This weekend, Delconians will come together again for Brayden. PrimoHoagies on Baltimore Pike in Springfield will donate all of the proceeds the store pulls in from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
Mike Ruger, who has owned the Springfield PrimoHoagies since 2010, said Brayden's dad, Jason Chandler, worked at the store for three years and he wanted to do what he could to help the family.
"I've never done anything like this before, but when Jason worked for us, he always took care of us," Ruger said. "I know his family is in need now, so it's the least we can do to help him out."
Ruger said all of his current staff volunteered to work for free on Saturday and former staff members - including the location's previous owner - are joining the crew to help out. Jason Chandler is even slated to swing by the store and help make hoagies at some point during the day.
"As soon as I told one person, everybody was calling me and saying 'I'll do it as well!'" Ruger said. "Some of them never even met Jason, they're just doing it for the cause."
Aside from people donating their time, Ruger said several of his vendors have donated food as well. There will also be a silent auction and 50/50 raffle tickets.
