Bigs in 2011 Draft
After yesterday's Live Chat, it seemed as if a lot of folks wanted to talk about the potential big men available in June's NBA Draft. If you read Thursday's entry, you know that the 76ers have very little wiggle room via free agency, and therefore almost certainly will use the draft and trade market to make improvements for the 2011-12 season.
The Sixers hold the No. 16 selection in the 2011 NBA Draft, scheduled for June 23. The Sixers also have a second-round selection. And while we're not yet at the point where we can narrow down the prospects the Sixers are targeting (the Chicago combine is May 18-22 and the Sixers will begin inviting prospects for workouts toward the end of the month), we can certainly take a look at some of the big men that will be available under the assumption that the team will want to add frontcourt depth.
Some of these guys are slated to go much higher than the Sixers' No. 16 spot, but a draft-day trade isn't an impossible scenario, so we include even the big men that are projected as top 5 picks. This year's draft isn't particularly mind-blowing, but there are a few intriguing interior players.
Here goes, in no particular order:
1.) Enes Kanter, projected anywhere from No. 3 to No. 8 in various mock drafts, a 6-foot-10 center from Turkey, 18 years old, 250 pounds, 7-1 wingspan, working out at the University of Kentucky, but ineligible because of his pro career in Turkey. Sixers would need to make a draft-day trade (a considerable piece, their No. 16, possibly an in-between guy like Marreese Speights in exchange for the other team's high pick and a considerable high-salary player to match the trade) to get into Kanter's range. The book on Kanter is that he's a legitimate low-post scorer as opposed to some big guys who want to play away from the basket. He isn't overwhelmingly athletic, but his basketball IQ allows him to make the correct interior plays more often than you'd expect.
2.) Jonas Valanciunas, projected anywhere from No. 4 to No. 11, a 6-11 center from Lithuania, 19 years old, and 240 pounds. Similar trade likely needed to move up for Valanciunas, although depending on how the combine and draft shake out, he could drop as some mock drafts already have him at No. 11. Seems like Kanter and Valanciunas have had some matchups coming up through the ranks, with Kanter being the more polished of the two. Very skinny, raw talent -- a guy that is developing and would likely be more of a project.
3.) Bismack Biyumbo, projected in the No. 5 to No. 8 range as more than one mock draft has him at No. 7, a 6-9 power forward from the Congo, 19 years old. Seems like this guy has burst onto the scene in the last month, specifically impressing scouts at the Nike Hoop Summit in Portland. His toughness seems to be his greatest asset: he blocks shots, rebounds, and gets to the free throw line. Undersized, but emotional is how the scouting report reads. Kind of reminds one of Reggie Evans, including poor free throw shooting. Sixers are still too low to snag this guy, so this would be deal territory.
4.) Donatas Montiejunas, projected anywhere from No. 11 to No. 20, a 7 footer from Lithuania, 20 years old, and 215 pounds. The scouting report reads best-case like Toronto's Andrea Bargnani and worst case like Phoenix's Channing Frye, this just doesn't seem to be the interior presence the Sixers need as both those guys prefer hanging out on the perimeter and impressing with their jump shots.
5.) Marcus Morris (Kansas), 6-9 power forward, Markieff Morris (Kansas), 6-9 power forward, Tristan Thompson (Texas), 6-8 power forward, Tobias Harris (Tennessee), 6-8 power foward, Kenneth Farried (Morehead State), 6-8 power forward, and Trey Thompkins (Georgia), 6-8 power forward. This list of guys basically gobbles up the mock draft area from No. 12 to No. 20. Clearly the list of 6-8 power forwards is long and the Sixers will have an opportunity to draft one of them at the No. 16 spot. The question will be whether or not the Sixers want to make a move to get a dedicated low-post player higher in the draft.
The Sixers also have the 20th pick of the draft's second round (50th overall), with which to snag a project big man. One mock draft in particular (draftexpress) has the Sixers selecting 6-11 center Jeremy Tyler with that pick. Tyler is 19 years old and weighs 240. He's from San Diego, but currently playing his first season of professional basketball overseas. That worked out well for Milwaukee's Brandon Jennings, but Tyler has had a rougher time of it. For a more in depth look, you can check out this New York Times piece about Tyler: Overseas.

BIG man! yeah we need it, i like the info up there. we could free up elton with a big man, sixers will be better then you think next year, especially minus kapono, songolia, and speights... possibly even IGGY! RALPH_LAUREN
Sixers want a big man -
How about trading the whole team to Orlando for Dwight Howard? phillydude
Liking Gary McGhee out of Pittsburgh with that second round pick... llkewlbean
Common Kate, what about the kid thats catching the attention of many teams, a guy who appears to be NBA ready the 18 year old out of Congo, 6-9 243 he has a 7-7 wingspan Bismack Biyombo. The kid can down right play and he is powerful and strong in the post. and will only get stronger. rayzoe
Let another team draft those "international" post players..they're all soft as toilet tissue! They've been getting drafted for as long as i can remember, and I can think of 1 who actually balls...BOGUT!! Yao..try again! Look up the Williams kid from Maryland...legit young 6'9 260 power forward. UseYourBrain
Stay away from Tyler. He's a wack job. otown philly fan- Come on Thorn....give Gary McGhee a chance. We need to draft 2 bigs and sign one....the more the merrier given that Hawes was the default starter for an entire season. scmona

All I've seen in this upcoming draft is undersized power forwards, and not one true center. Maybe if Brand wasn't already here, I'd feel different, and color me crazy, but I'd much rather go after Klay Thompson. He fills a need, and no one's perfect, so I'm sure Collins can work with him and mold his potential. BlackFeet01
Give me Biyumbo and I'd be ecstatic. Perfect fit for this team, athletic enough to run the floor on the break, and a good enough defender to help start it. Llamaboy1375
Thanks for having my back Llamaboy1375, some of us know basketball other perpetrate. you would think with internet access they would at least do some research prior making a comment. I guess that's all a part of being ignorant. Not calling anyone dumb just that you don't know better.
Peace rayzoe- I am a loyal fan. I'm more loyal to my team than I am to my own wife. Yup I said it. If they go out and draft a European center, I'm through. I will not watch this team ever again. Seeing how they never acquire multiple pick you can't afford to waste one on a soft interior player.
Comment removed.- I "settle" on a them trading the pick and get more value. Why give a guarantee contract to a project. A second round project you can cut. And what part of my previous postings did you interpret I am calling for a 6'6" tweener. Don't be one of those guys.
Forget all these impostors and bring in the real big man. Sign Clarence Clemons! scribbles- My draft board would be one of the Morris twins. If they are both gone trade down first round Chicago has 3 pick two in the first. I would ask for 30th and 43rd picks. Trading the 30th the Clippers for their two second round picks 37th and 47th. Leaving us with four picks in the second.
Keith Benson, Jordan Williams and Jeremy Tyler should be there. Trade Songaila for Hasheen Thabeet. Sign Oden if the price is right.
kaman kills this debate. kenyon backs him up. this bismark kid.. havent heard of him.. if hes an ibaka type i would go for it. ANYTHING LESS... NO! the pick? i dunno. i say trade it. i cant get over j.r. smith.. i can see him CLEARLY giving it to wade and lebron. lou noc and the pick.. for smith. he's 25 people. and ready. younger than 9.. damn sp8ts.you gotta step up man.. the people have spoken.. ITS AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY. I again am part of the minority. dont make me look bad. MAN!! UP!! lets go,. kaman kenyon brand sp8ts bring back battie. and a little thad at the 5. would the clips swap picks? 9 or 10 they might. if so we could drop battie. i like him though. and draft a big.. gotta look at this bismark guy. he sounds short. and the 2nd pick if the kid is there head case or not i would take him. sp8ts i just brought in ALOT OF BIGS!! you better step up. combocancer1975
If people wonder why less and less people give a sh*t about the NBA, look at this article... While the article is well-written and researched, the top four "big men" prospects are from Lithuania, Congo and Turkey. Who has ever seen these guys play? How exactly would this excite a fan base and sell tickets? Even if any of them can play, you won't have anybody who will be excited to buy a ticket to watch them play any time soon. Green46- =lol@don't be one of those guys. He has a point though, this management has a terrible past performance record of drafting swingman tweeners. I think they finally wake up this time though. Big Vil, if they draft a Euro and you bounce, there will be no one left to counter jonKap with a funny comment.
What's the deal with all the undersized PF. isn't thad listed by the NBA as 6"8? We need a center first; 6"10 or taller. we can use the 2nd rd or MLE for a back up PF since brand won't be traded and will snag most of the minutes at that position.
Can people please stop requesting for Kaman. What games have you guys been watching? couldn't have been ESPN; They must be avid clippers fans and have NBA league pass. Seriously, dude wasn't even on the bench with a cup of gatorade in any of blake griffin's highlights. i rather draft a big with some potential and let him play. Please stop asking for spencer hawes on steroids. Thanks - Quixote is right that we don't need another 6'6". To be honest we didn't need Turner but he is here now and I like his game. But don't just draft any 7' dude because we need a center. Not one center in this draft class impresses me at all. The PF's are deep get Brands replacement now!
I think the Morris twins have upside like the Lopez twins. We need someone who can score and defend. No soft European stiffs. oglejd

Counting international draft picks that pan out does not take long... Philly Fan in Kuwait
If Kanter is out of reach, I'd like the Sixers to get Kenneth Faried. At pick 16 he is the only one out of those you mentioned Kate that I think will compete inside against NBA bigs. He led the NCAA in rebounding (maybe twice) and his tenacity on the glass has people comparing him to Dennis Rodman. Let the teams in front of us sleep on him because he's 6'8. If he's there and the Sixers don't take him it would be a mistake. Aaron B
need more talent shawnmac
This draft is Center-less and really pretty limited on talent. Best chance to draft a big was either Cousins or Favors. With that we'll need to look at a trade for size then just draft the best player available 7mel11
keep them coming, kate. fishtown charlie
The kid from the congo sounds intriguing because of his wing span. We need someone who can protect the rim. I am sure everyone is even more intrigued by him after the success of Ibaka. It is just a shame we wasted a pick on Speights when we could have picked Ibaka, McGee, or Hibbert that year. Mattb
I like the 6'9" kid from Morehouse State, Kenneth Faried. A beast on the boards. mdriban
international bball has gotten better year after year. maybe the level of player is also. and if all college big men are 6'8", then i'll take the big dude from the congo. fishtown charlie
Thompson from UT could be a great player. Saw him play all year and he is great inside. That said, he is not a center that we need but would be a great replacement for Brand eventually. psuwelsh
What's w/ all the talk about drafting another forward? A new "forward" power or not, just takes minutes from EB and TY. Not saying there's a lot out there to be had, but let's concentrate on looking/packaging for a real force as a center that would free-up EB & TY to do there thing. If EB stays, and I think he should, let's build a team that let's him play his game for next 2 yrs.
Can we avoid going into new season w/ a top draft choice or new player who doesn't exactly fit-in anywhere? Can we build a team where what talent we have is maximized at every position? wordsword- I think you are the only one that has gone out and definitively said they want Brand back. I think you have to take what the draft gives you and worry about fitting in later. How many more years can you expect Brand to be here. If the draft class is deep in PF why not get his replacement now. Thad is not a PF he can play some 4 but he is a SF
bismack biyumbo---great name. If he turns out to be a good shot blocker i could see his nickname quickly becoming "smack". murdock101
Craig Brackins is your project big man. I don't see a need for another one. Get one via trade somehow and get depth in the draft, not your starter. LooGitsDubC
Kate Fagan gave the impression that Brackins does not really fit in their plans. I tend to agree with BilVil: if there are no legitimate centers in the draft, then get the best power forward to replace Brand down the line. If Iguodala is traded, they can move Young to small forward. Try to move Iguodala and Speights for a defensive-minded center, if at all possible. I know BlackFoot01 likes Klay Thompson, the 6:6 shooting guard from Washington, but I doubt the Sixers will go that route, given that Meeks, Holiday, Turner, and Williams are their guard rotation. They could use a guy like Thompson, however, if they are thinking of moving Turner to the three, keeping Young at the four, and feel that Meeks is not a quality starting two, but better coming off the bench. My problem with Meeks was his tendency to disappear in too many games and his seeming lack of a solid mid-range game to go with his three-point shooting. Collins seems to like him, however, so they may be looking strictly at shoring up their weak interior defense. In many respects, I think that Turner is the key, particularly if he can improve his outside shooting touch when schooled by Herb Magee. chuckw
okay, so I guess the question should've been, who are the defensive power forwards in this draft. I've liked what I've heard about Markieff. Who else is defensive-minded??? @chuckw: YES, Meeks is WACK. He plays like a old Rashard Lewis (catch-and-shoot limited), and he's under 25, no defense, undersized, I don't get the love for him. And he's our only pure SG, like Collins said. BlackFeet01- Meeks? Wack? I think that's a little over the top. As a fan base I know we are hungry. But it's the guy's second season. The first season he actually got minutes. His defense wasn't horrible. It was better than Kapono's, which isn't saying much I know. These young guards just need time to gel. Meeks problem is he plays off of others. Meeks and Lou should be coming of the bench next season.
Kaman= hawes on steroids? Didn't know roids gave you a highly efficient back to basket game a turnaround j left or right shoulder and a face up j out to 18 ft... Left AND right hand hook. All with a bball iq. Defense well..... Yunno. That's ok though.. Who will he have to defend??? Z? Damp? Anthony? Noah? An undersized boozer?? He would be the 2nd best center in the east.. Hes expiring and hes 29. Players tend to disappear when they are not in the teams plans.. Its clear jordan and blake are the future. Kenyon picks up the slack as the defensive 5. If it's up to the players who will be brought in kamans a sixer. combocancer1975
Combo: what kind of money and length of contract would you anticipate Kaman should get with the Sixers, given that he has missed 127 games in three of the last four years due to injury? Another bad contract would sink the Sixers for years, particularly if Kaman goes lame. chuckw
@BigVil: so what, you think he can develop some driving skills, and stop being a catch-and-shoot guy? and yes, his defense sucks, if not HORRIBLE. I mean, if u REALLY think he can be a quality guard, u TRULY belive that, than I'll buy into wat ur trying to sell. BlackFeet01- Meeks needs play run for him. It was his second year man and he isn't the focal point of the offense. The better Jrue and Turner get the better Meeks will become. Meeks can drive why he didn't I can't explain. If you're the teams main 3 point threat I guess you think you need to be glued to the arc. One of the main things in basketball is you have to make people defend you. If he spent more time running people off screens and tiring them out I think he would be more effective. He had some deflections he was active. Wade is one of the hardest covers in the league. He averaged 22 points that's elow his career and playoff averages. He didn't do it all by himself. I don't recall a point in the series when Collins had to take him out. Is he Joe Dumars? No but he isn't horrible.
you guy's better listen once and for all and get the message out iggy to lakers for devin eubank and derick charecter and thaddeus young and speights for kaman and we all are going to be really happy.. sports1
chuck if he goes all 82... 12-14 mil. if he disappears. 7-9 mil. he'll come in ready its a contract year combocancer1975- If you're that serious about Kaman why not try to get Bogut. He has better number, two years younger and just as injury prone. Why not Oden? What is the attraction of Kaman?
Meeks' D probably has gotten better, but he's still got a ways to go to reach @ least average. I believe it was the team D that limited Flash to what he averaged, not as much Meeks. They do say however that you really come to life in year 3 (D Rose), so I guess I'll be patient with this guy, and focus on acquiring our future 4 in this draft. BlackFeet01
@BigVil: tell me this then, what's Meeks' ceiling, in ur mind? Like stats, and how much his D will improve. I kno ur not a fortune teller, but make an educated projection. BlackFeet01- I will be happy if he gives us 10 off the bench. Just to give opposing teams something to think about. To make them play us honest. He will essentially fill the same role as Willie Green. He is already better than Willie Green. At some point Turner will be the SG. But meek is a better shooter. I've seen him move without the ball. So I know he can do it. They really need the Summer league and a good camp
@BigVil: you'd have to put some of that "floos..." or whatever you call it in Mr. Kohl's drink to get him to give us Bogut. He's the league's 2nd best center, and all-defensive team caliber when healthy. BlackFeet01- lol Just messing with Combo. We really just need a goon to do the dirty work. The guards an Thad will do most of the scoring. The player we really needed was Tyson Chandler but that ship has sailed. I think he is the reason why Dallas will win the championship
Craig brackins deserves a shot. Not sure why collins didn't play him more. The guy is long. I'm not saying he's anywhere close to durant or odom but he has a body type close to theirs and that's something that almost every team covets. A lanky player who can shoot and if he plays, D that's even better.
I really appreciate the folks who posted how many games kaman has missed plus he continues to get older and his knee is worse than Iggy's on iggy's most painful day. Please do not trade for him, o wait it's sixers mgmt, they will! Mack of the Pack- How much does Collins not like Brackins if he can't get any time ahead of Speights. Collins is big on practice, so I guess he really hasn't shown enough in practice. I would have at least put him in some of the meaningless games at the end of the season. Again through Summer league will be crucial for the young players. This will be Jrue and Meeks last Summer league. Turner and Brackins need the time with Meeks and Jrue.
yes combo, kaman = hawes on steroids but not in a good way. Just in appearance. Kaman had alittle game when he first came into the league but because of injury, etc he's limited now.
Like most have already posted, I agrre to get brand's replacement now. Maybe we may have to draft the best option available and then package that with iggy/speights for a legit Center. I know craig brackins in listed as either 6"9 or 6"10 but he has no body mass whatsoever. i think he could make a great SF behind thad. he has the outside shot and wingspan. At the PF i just see him being a very poor man's christopher cry baby bosh. No thanks. Mack of the Pack- I would trade our first round pick and Brackins for JaVale McGee. If the Wiz draft a center with their top pick I think you have to at least call.
yeah, that's a nice move too bigVil. It's a shame when you see all the talent that the terrible teams have that we missed when our number was called. It's like whoever is scouting for the sixers is clueless.Get rid of that person before your get rid of iggy.
Maybe things will start looking up since collins will have a say so in this. Then again, I heard collins at one point wanted Favors. Wesley johnson or cousins i could see, but not Favors dude, lol Mack of the Pack
Bogut.. Would Milwaukee do it.?? If so then I'm all for it. But since we need size. Quality. ACTUAL. Not listed. Size. with deandre. kamans' "available" .. Basically my thoughts are NEED and AVAILABILITY.. The clips need a 3. We need a 5.. Kamans expiring.. We know players show up in the best shape of their lives during a contract year. He may show up in mid season form. 82 games we get what we wanted. And we negotiate a new deal. If injured I would pay for his skill and size.. That's 8 mil right there. But the injuries. Will keep him at that #. Kamans DIRK good on the block and mid post. He's good. Very good. But we MUST surround him with athletic DEFENSIVE and REBOUNDING MINDED BIGS! taj Gibson. Joel Anthony. Tyrone hill. Kenyon Martin. That way the dynamics don't clash. When dynamics clash I don't care how good the players are IT NEVER WORKS!!! NEVER!! Especially at the same position.. Stackhouse iverson.. Iverson Hughes. Eddie jones Kobe. Cartwright Ewing. Vince and t Mac. As good as those players are individually.. It would never work on the court. AND WIN! Dirk and Chandler. That's beauty on the court to me. Exact opposites.. TOTAL OPPOSITES! But one shoots the other rebounds.. The rebounder does not want to shoot because he know/realizes he's a rebounder. So he doesn't even want the ball ok.. Shoot the ball dirk.. I'll go get it and dunk it. Ben and Rasheed. Mchale and chief. Rambis and Kareem. 1 high skill big. +. 1 garbageman big.. BOTH WITH EQUAL MEASURABLES! That wins in the NBA. Lucas and Walton. Kaman and Kenyon. Or Sam.. But starts with kaman. Or if not Kenyon or Sam the kid from Congo "sounds" good.. Im not signing off on it though because I haven't seen him. I've seen Kenyon and kaman.. The shooter and the dunker. It works. combocancer1975- Kaman is a little risk if he doesn't work out the his contract will expire and you've lost nothing I get it. But we need to also improve the team significantly I'd like to see them get a guy no older than his mid twenties that can grow with this team. If Washington goes for a big man I would make McGee our priority. Washington needs a small forward and I don't think Josh Howard worked out for them. Also move Speights and Iguodala and get some picks back. Iguodala for Kaman and a second. Speights and Nocioni for Thabeet and Jordan Hill or to Sacramento for Whiteside and Casspi. Your starting lineup would be
Jrue
Turner
Thad
Brand
McGee.
Then when Brand moves on we put Hawes at the 4.
Memo to Rod Thorn & Ed Stefanski: Please either draft SG-Klay Thompson out of WSU or PF- Jordan Williams out of Maryland with the 16th pick. In the 2nd rd., please either draft PF-Nikola Vucevic out of USC or PF- Jamie Skeen out of VCU. After the draft, try a sign and trade with Portland for Greg Oden (IF HEALTHY) giving them Iguodala. Potential starting lineup/backups for next season: PG-Holiday/Williams, SG-Thompson/Meeks, SF-Turner/Young, PF-Brand/Vucevic, and C-Oden/Hawes. Good luck! Go Phillies!!! uscwee
The draft seems to be getting weaker and weaker every year. MrMiles1
@BigVil: multiple mock drafts I've seen, have DC picking a big, so McGee may not be too far from our grasp. And I believe Hill will be a great power forward in time. BlackFeet01- And they would e dumb it the did. I don't think anyone here would be upset if McGee was a Sixer. They have guards. They have big men. They need a SF. I swear if they do something as dumb as move McGee and the Sixers don't get involved....I AM THROUGH!!!!!!!

The only hope for the Sixers to land an impact big man in the draft is Bismack Biyombo. Remember the name. The kid is a beast! He's Ben Wallace in his prime. 6'9" 245. Ridiculous athleticism. Great shotblocker. Repeat, the ONLY HOPE FOR THE SIXERS TO LAND AN IMPACT BIG IN THE DRAFT! Check out his video from the NIKE HOOPS SUMMIT. http://www.nbadraft.net/players/bismack-biyombo MrMiles1
My questions for our posters here: how many of you have actually seen the top sixteen most likely draft picks in action this past season, particularly as college ball is getting harder to watch because of fewer stars? There is much speculation here, but how much is fueled by scouting reports and draft junkies and how much by having seen these guys play? Just curious. At least with the pros, must of us have seen the players we are discussing although even there some of the bigs being mentioned played very little last season, either because of poor play or injuries, guys like Thabeet, Whiteside, Oden and Kaman. Oden in particular strikes me as more fragile than Floyd Patterson's legendary glass jaw.
Lastly, many of us are excited about imput from Doug Collins, but Larry Brown also had major imput with former GM Billy King, and that did not work out very well. Coaches and GMs do not always see eye to eye. Admittedly, we are worried about Stefanski, but Rod Thorn seems to be the new decision maker, although at 70 years old (in two weeks), how much fire is left in the belly for dramatic moves to improve this club? chuckw- Big men in general are fragile as of late. And i was going to talk about the durability of the big men in the NBA. Aside from Dwight Howard it seems like every team has had a center missing significant time.
- Stupid thought but don't e suprised to see them draft Justin Holiday in the second round
Trades for a quality big are very unlikely therefore anyone you get will be a project. You guys seem to love Kaman but he's not good, check out his stats on a non-playoff team. McGee would be worth it but the Wizards aren't giving him up. They are building around him & Wall.
As for the draft the best fits would be Kantner and Biyumbo but unless we move up in the draft they'll be gone. The same with the Lithuanian. The Morris twins are too small, they're Elton Brand lite.
Our only real move is to trade Iggy & our pick to the Wizards, Jazz or Pistons for their pick and a lesser player. mtairy1
Iggy & No. 50 for Gay. Speights & No. 16 for Kammon.
PG- Halliday
SG- Meeks
SF- Gay
PF- Brand
C- Kammon
Bench- Turner, Williams, Hawes, Brackins FetchDixon
@fetchdixon, I got caught up in the "get Rudy Gay" movement also even though Memphis gave no indication he was available. After losing to OKC it was apparent they needed consistent scoring from the sg or sf position. So why would they trade away the thing they need the most?
Kaman sucks and has avged only 49 GP over the last 4 seasons.
BTW, you left out Thad in your mock lineup. mtairy1
