Andrew Bynum misses 76ers practice due to right knee discomfort

POSTED: Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 1:01 PM

Andrew Bynum, who was expected to practice for the first time with the 76ers on Wednesday, did not take part in today’s workout at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Bynum sat out with right knee discomfort.

"Andrew is out until he is pain-free," 76ers general manager Tony DiLeo said after today's practice.

Bynum said the key is not to come back too soon and have an even greater setback.

"I think it's good to be cautious and not to upset the knee and let it fully heal than trying to get out too soon," Bynun said.

Bynum said he doesn't have pain when he walks, but does when he does strenuous activity.

Nobody would say if he would be able to play in the Sixers opener, Oct. 31 at the Wells Fargo Center against the Denver Nuggets.

Yet if he's still having pain and needs rest, it would be very surprising if Bynum is in the opening night lineup.

The other Sixers who did not practice were Kwame Brown (left calf strain), Maalik Wayns (head contusion) and Evan Turner (left ankle sprain). Those three players are listed as day to day.

In addition, Dorell Wright (right quad contusion) went through non-contact drills.

with dc saying he'd need to be in 6-7 practices before he'd play him, this pretty much eliminates him from opening night.....bummer! hopefully the prognosticators who said late november are wrong too but i'd take that over him missing the year b/c they brought him back too soon.

I want Vegas odds on what happens first - Bynum on the court or a Flyers game.

Shoot...I expected as much since we've heard next-to-nothing about what he's been up to the last week or so and have gotten no indication from the team about his progress or schedule. Can't wait to hear what DiLeo has to say. I won't speculate until we hear from the team.

I had a feeling team was covering up something worse with him. Sixers have bad luck with bigs.

Look, if he doesn't work out then he's gone after this year..Still a good move getting rid of Iggy and freeing up that loot....

Hate to say it, but this is likely a season long saga with Bynum.

Hope I'm wrong, but his history with the Lakers suggests it may be the case ...

He has to be in the lineup before we play NYK, MIA, LAL and OKC. That way we can truly gauge how we measure up

Yes,,,,very concerned. Once I heard the word "pain" (bout two weeks ago) I knew that most of the info coming from the Sixers was BS. This is a scarey situation.

We're not dealing with a tough man here. I'm sure he's being ultra cautious. Let him sit til Jan 1. Enough time after that to get ready for the playoffs. This is not a guy that's going to push through pain. We knew that when we got him. I'd really rather not have to deal with stories about him until he's healthy and playing. Otherwise, he's just going to frustrate us. In order not be frustrated, I'm setting my personal timetable expectation at 1/1/13 for his return. I recommend true Sixers fans do the same.

This team will be measurably improved by the balance that outside shooting presents. It amazes me how much of a revelation that is to so called b-ball fans. Heyyyy, you have to be able to shoot in basketball. It's a prerequisite. Interior defense and defensive rebounding will be our biggest challenges. Offense will be tough to stop. We're just gonna GUT teams. Drive and dish -----pop. Three. Then you add Turner drilling the long lost art of mid range jumpers. Players realize how demoralizing that combo is. It makes you feel like you just can't guard a team. Drive, outside, midrange. Usually you can take away two of these, but you can't guard all three shooting points. Enjoy this offense, and just hope we can rebound and that Andrew isn't as much of a p-ss as he appears to be.

exdand - good post. Bynum has, unquestionably, the physical tools to be a beast in the middle. Whether he has the mental toughness and desire to show up consistently - night in and night out - is an open question.

Just a lot of unanswered questions about his injury and recovery time. Until we get answers, just guesswork about future availability.
