Obama on Gun Laws

Given what's going on in Philly today regarding local gun laws, we thought you might be interested in this:

During an interview yesterday with Sen. Barack Obama, we asked what he could do as president to help Philadelphia fight gun violence.

"We do have to strengthen some of our gun laws and enforce those that are already on the books, particularly on tracing guns that are coming from unscrupulous gun dealers," Obama said.

Obama said he supported legislation introduced in the Senate last year that would give local law enforcement access to gun tracing data from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

"It’s something that I have voted for in the past," Obama said. But he added "my sense is that it’s not a strategy that is going to get at the root problem. We’ve got to get at illegal gun dealers or those who are dealing with straw gun purchases, as opposed to people who are purchasing guns through normal legal channels."
