Nutter Says He Supports Review Of City Commissioners

In the wake of news that election official Renee Tartaglione had been fined for ethical violations, Mayor Nutter today said he supported a full review of the elected city commissioners.

"I would still suggest that is an office that needs to be fully examined for what they do, how they do it," Nutter said of the office, which runs Election Day operations. The commissioners are among the row offices that good government groups have called to be abolished.

As to when any kind of examination might happen, Nutter said: "I don't have a date certain. It is certainly something on our radar screen."

Tartaglione resigned abruptly last month as deputy and right-hand aide to her mother, Marge Tartaglione, the longtime chairwoman of the city commissioners. Yesterday, the city Ethics Board announced a settlement in which Renee Tartaglione admitted to repeated, blatant violations of the city charter's ban on political activity by city employees.
