Mayor Nutter today repeated his call that the Board of Revision of Taxes board members resign -- even through the 7 members yesterday said they had no intention of leaving.
"There is no excuse for the culture and the environment over at the BRT," Nutter said. "That agency as we know it cannot continue to function."
Nutter said he would continue his efforts to reform or dissolve the BRT, the subject of a damning investigation by the Philadelphia Inquirer, which has revealed a pattern of longstanding mismanagement, political patronage and inaccurate assessments.
"This effort to fight to hold on to their $70,000 part time positions is, I think, indicative of the kind of mindset we've seen over there for some time," Nutter said.
Yesterday, Nutter sent two pieces of legislation to City Council on the BRT, to strip board members of their salaries and shift much of the agency funding to city control. But no Council members actually introduced the legislation yesterday. Still, Nutter said he had been talking with members and was hopeful it would work out.
"I think the council members wanted an opportunity to more fully discss the legislation that was sent up yesterday," Nutter said. "There were some operational concerns, which I think we can address. Council wanted to make sure that the main responsibilities of the BRT could still be carried out if there were a temporary vaccum in leadership. We'll work through those particulars."
