Nutter: Fumo Sentence "Almost Unexplainable" But Jail Is Jail

Mayor Nutter expanded today on the statement his office released yesterday after former state Sen. Vince Fumo was sentenced to four years and seven months in federal prison for his conviction on 137 corruption charges. Nutter said U.S. District Justice Ronald Buckwalter's ruling was "almost unexplainable" when compared to the prison terms being served by former city Treasurer Corey Kemp [10 years] and former City Councilman Rick Mariano [6.5 years.]

That's not to say, Nutter cautioned, that Fumo's future looks nice and easy in the big house.

"Look, jail is jail, ultimately. I don't think anyone wants to have their freedom taken away, whether its four years, four months, or four minutes," Nutter said. "Even at four years and seven months, I don't know that anyone thinks that doing jail time is an easy thing to do. To have your freedom taken away from you is a pretty serious thing."
