Minor changes to be made to newly approved redistricting map

Minor changes are still being made to the city's recently approved redistricting map.

Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller introduced a bill today that would make minor modifications to a plan that fixes some of the current gerrymandering problems with the city's 10 councilmanic districts.

That plan, introduced by Councilmen Frank DiCicco and Jim Kenney passed two weeks ago 15-2 with Mayor Nutter's approval.

Under retiring Councilwoman Miller's proposal, the 11th ward would remain in the 8th district, a move supported by her likely successor Cindy Bass. That ward is located in North Philadelphia at the southern end of the 8th district. In the DiCicco-Kenney map, Councilman Darrell Clarke's 5th district had some of the 11th ward.

Other changes include division swaps between the 1st and 2nd councilmanic districts in the south and between the 7th, 8th and 9th councilmanic districts in the North.

For now, the changes do not appear to be controversial.
