Heavy Turnout, Few Problems So Far In Delco

As of noon, turnout in Delaware County appears to be exceeding 2004 voter turnout levels, according to Election Bureau Solicitor Frank Catania, but no major problems have been reported at the county’s 427 polling places.

From Will Bender:  As of noon, turnout in Delaware County appears to be exceeding 2004 voter turnout levels, according to Election Bureau Solicitor Frank Catania, but no major problems have been reported at the county's 427 polling places.

At least nothing like last November, when an Upper Darby Democratic leader was charged with punching a 62-year-old Republican councilman, then taking him down with a "leg-sweep maneuver." They were arguing about sign placement.

Catania said he received a call this morning from a voter in Ridley Park who complained that a machine operator was "singing at the polling place and that distracted him from voting."

"Unfortunately, I am powerless to stop that," said Catania, who did not inquire as to which tune the worker was allegedly belting out.

County election officials have distributed nearly 4,000 "watcher" certificates to lawyers and other representatives of the campaigns and parties – mostly Democrats – who want to monitor polling place activity. That number is about double the typical amount for a presidential election in Delco, Catania said.
