City officials expect peaceful protest tomorrow

City officials met with organizers from the Occupy Philadelphia protest group this afternoon and said they expect a peaceful demonstration to kick off around City Hall tomorrow morning.

"We're going to make sure the people of Philadelphia are not disrupted," said Managing Director Rich Negrin, who added that organizers said they were not not planning to disrupt traffic or turn violent, although he said there could be some delays for people driving in Center City.

Exactly how many protestors will descend outside City Hall tomorrow or for how long is not clear. Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said they will be ready with extra patrols  -- which he noted will come at a cost, because he doesn't want to take cops out of neighborhoods.

"There is going to be some overtime involved if it goes on for a period of time," Ramsey said. "We'll track it seperately."

Negrin said they were talking with organizers about getting permits to camp out overnight.

The expected protests are an extension of demonstrations that have been underway on Wall Street for several weeks and are spreading around the nation. Check out this story from today's Daily News for more on the movement.
