At Temple U., check out the shoes

Temple University will set up a shoe cam to capture students' creativity in footwear on graduation day.

How does one exercise individuality on graduation day when awash in a sea of same-colored gowns?

Over the years, some students have decorated their caps. That makes for a nice aerial view.

But at Temple University, look down at the fancy footwear on display.

"We've noticed over the years that a lot of students go all out with the shoes they wear at commencement," said Eryn Jelesiewicz, a Temple spokeswoman, "probably as a way to distinguish themselves in a sea of black robes."

The idea came from university photographer Betsy Manning, who has noticed over the years that students have worn extreme heels and colorful shoes as a way to exert their individuality. She plans to set up a "shoe cam" at the Liacouras Center on commencement day, Thursday, May 16, to check out the styles. She'll be taking photos as students begin to arrive at 8:30 a.m. Graduation starts at 10 a.m.

Manning will share the findings with the university community, via social media. Check out #TUgradshoes on graduation day.
