More mosquito sprayings this week

Two more mosquito sprayings will take place in Bucks County this week, as the number of mosquitos carrying West Nile Virus in the county continues to rise.

According to a state website, 22 mosquito samples have tested positive for the virus as of Tuesday afternoon, up from two positive samples a few weeks ago. There have been no human cases reported anywhere in the state so far this year, the website says. There were 60 human cases reported statewide last year, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (C.D.C.).

About 70 to 80 percent of the people who contract West Nile Virus display no symptoms, the C.D.C. says. But it can be fatal: there were 286 deaths nationwide last year, according to agency statistics, four in Pennsylvania.

The new sprayings are to take place in Northampton's Tyler State Park on Wednesday and in Bristol Township's Junewood section on Friday. The county health department has already conducted sprayings in Penndel, Falls Township, Bristol Township, Buckingham Township and New Britain Township, according to county press releases.
