Philly's title Warriors

Philly's title Warriors

Before they moved to northern California in the summer of 1962, the Warriors won two championships in Philadelphia, including what is considered the NBA's first title. A quick glance at those Finals:

Joe Fulks, who had averaged 23.1 points to win the league's scoring title (6.3 points ahead of everyone else), poured in 34 points before a sold-out crowd of 8,221 in Game 5 at the Arena to win the first championship of the Basketball of America Association (the forerunner to the NBA), 83-80 ... Howie Dallmar made a one-hand set shot from the right of the foul line with just over a minute to go to put Philadelphia ahead to stay ... The Warriors, who had led by 14 after the first quarter, were down five when the fourth period started ... Fulks had 37 in the 84-71 victory to open the series ... Temple's Angelo Musi and Saint Joseph's Matt Guokas Sr. and George Senesky were among the supporting cast ... Philadelphia rolled through the playoffs with an 8-2 record.

Joe Graboski scored 29 points and Villanova's Paul Arizin, who averaged 27.6 points a game in the Finals, had 26 in the 99-88 clincher in front of 11,194 who braved early April snow and rain to reach Convention Hall ... Four other players averaged double figures in the Finals, including La Salle's Tom Gola (13.8) and Jack George (13.6) ... Gola and Arizin each had 10 points in the third period of the finale as the Warriors, who were just 12-57 three seasons earlier, pulled away ... Seven of the 11 Warriors were productsof Philly colleges ... Arizin scored 35 in the deciding Game 5 of the previous series, as the Warriors held off the Syracuse Nationals (forerunner of the 76ers).
