Extras on the Extras

Extra stuff on the Phillies' extra inning games.

On Sunday, the Phillies played their third consecutive extra-inning game, something they have now done 15 times since 1916, including four times under Charlie Manuel. In that time, they have not had four extra-inning games in a row.

The Major League record for consecutive extra-inning games, according to baseball-almanac, is five, by the 1908 Detroit Tigers. The White Sox, the Phillies' opponent for all of this weekend's extra fun, were the Tigers' foe in the first four of those games.

The last time any MLB team played four consecutive extra-inning games was when Mariners and Rangers did so in every contest of a four-game series in Seattle on Sept. 16-19, 2002. The Phillies' Michael Young was a Texas Ranger at the time. He played all 41 innings and went 4-for-17 with three runs scored and two RBI as the Rangers dropped three of the four.
