Another Top 2 for Andy

POSTED: Sunday, January 1, 2012, 4:07 PM

Unless the Giants-Cowboys game ends in a tie Sunday night, the Eagles (8-8) will finish second in the NFC East. It would be the 10th time in 13 seasons that Andy Reid will have finished in the top two in the division.

Here's how the final NFC East standings break down during the Reid era (1999-10):

 Team

 1st

 2nd

 3rd

 4th

 5th
 Won
 NFC
 Won
 SB
 Eagles  6  3  0  2  1  1  0
 Giants  3  3  5  1  0  2  1
 Cowboys  2  4  3  2  1  0  0
 Redskins  1  2  4  5  0  0  0
 *Cardinals    0  0  0  2  1  0  0

*Includes only Cardinals seasons (1999-01) in NFC East.

This division is up for grabs next year. Midgets and cowgirls are on a decline.

Nine 2nd place or higher finishes and one NFC title. Not real impressive. This year they went 5-1 in the pathetic NFC East and 3-7 against the NFL. Again, not impressive.

A meaningless win over a disinterested, terrible Redskins team to finish, out of the Playoffs, at 8 and 8. Now, here comes the barrage of "worthless" stats, saying how really good this team is. Andy and Juan will be back to mismanage for another year, Howie the Bean Counter will miss again on the top picks, but wind up with his usual 8 to 10 new "Special Team" players that will replace better veterans who make more money. The Insanity continues!

An impressive track record by an under-appreciated coach whose value wont take long after he leaves to recognize. Fly, Dream Team, Fly in 2012!!!

Good graphic, shows that the Giants have been the best team in the Reid era. Two SB's attended, ONE WON! All we did these last 3 games was move down the draft board! Oh wait, Reid can't draft anyway! Is the another below-average safety or LB out there they can draft? FIRE ANDY ***** FIRE ANDY ***** FIRE ANDY Aaarrgghhh!!!!

Jeffery Lurie is Norman Braman without the passport, disgraceful ownership. This organization will never win a championship with this regime.

I have another way of placing the Eagles. 13 teams had winning records, so they are tied for 14th place with between 5 and 7 teams depending on the scores on the late games. Do you understand now?

The ONLY thing that counts in the chart is the big goose egg in the "Superbowl Wins" column by Reid and the Eagles.

Can you people please understand, WINNING RECORD, PLAYOFF WINS, DIVISIONAL WINS, CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS MEAN SQUAT!!!! It's all nothing but padding a mediocre record with meaningless stats!

The NFL is all about the SUPERBOWL - everything else is meaningless. 1-15 might as well be the same as 8-8 or even 15-1 if there is no Superbowl win at the end. Well, except to the owners who continue to rake in your cash!

In the last few years, the Eagles haven't done much. Andy's early years were good. Andy stopped being a good coach after the SB loss.

Gotta say, a Superbowl ring trumps EVERYTHING. Andy Reid would never have to buy a dinner in Philly again if he wins an SB. Just one, please. Just one...

You just gotta admire people who find silver linings in everything.

About this blog

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook. Email him at boopstats@phillynews.com.
