McCord endorsed by liberal wards in Phila, Pittsburgh
State Treasurer Rob McCord has been endorsed by Democratic organizations in two prominent liberal wards - the Eighth, in Philadelphia, and the 14th in Pittsburgh - in the primary for governor.
State Treasurer Rob McCord has captured the backing of two famous left-leaning ward organizations from opposite sides of Pennsylvania in the Democratic primary for governor.
Philadelphia's Eighth Ward Democratic organization in Center City announced Monday it was endorsing McCord for the nomination to take on Gov. Corbett.
"After hearing from the other campaigns, Treasurer McCord was head and shoulders above the rest," said State Sen. Larry Farnese (D., Phila.), who also is the leader of the ward, known for activism and high primary voter-turnout rates.
"I am personally grateful for this endorsement from a key 'good government ward,'" McCord said in a statement. "The enthusiastic voters in Philadelphia's Eighth Ward are likely to make a big difference in this upcoming primary election, so I know there is a valuable Primary Day benefit to this endorsement as well,"
The 14th Ward Independent Democratic Club in Pittsburgh, one of the most active groups in the city, also endorsed McCord. The bulk of its territory is in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood, and also includes parts of Point Breeze, Regent Square and Swisshelm Park.
McCord is competing against Katie McGinty, Allyson Schwartz and Tom Wolf for the Democratic nod in the May 20 primary election.
