Summer tanning season feels very far away, doesn’t it? And maybe you’d rather avoid than soak in the sun’s rays. Self-tanning has been a game-changer.

Summer tanning season feels very far away, doesn't it? And maybe you'd rather avoid than soak in the sun's rays. Self-tanning has been a game-changer. There are many good products out there now that won't turn you orange.

Prep skin: Exfoliate dead skin cells for a smooth, even application. Use exfoliating gloves or a loofah. Shave your legs and any other areas where you'll apply tanner. Otherwise, it will stick to the hair.

Moisturize only the really dry areas such as elbows, hands, knees, wrists, and ankles to prevent the tan from getting patchy and dark in those areas.

Application: Use a tanning mitt and apply with circular motions. Try the St. Tropez Applicator Mitt, ($6.50, Ulta). Use a foundation brush to blend where needed.

Maintenance: Moisturize daily to preserve your tan and keep it looking fresh. Sleep in loose garments that cover skin so the tanning lotion doesn't stain bedding.

Removal: A tan lasts up to a week. Exfoliate to scrub away the color and moisturize skin. Repeat tanning application if needed.

Two to try: Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun Moisturizing Lotion ($11.99, Target); St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse ($44, Ulta).
