The other King who marched: Honoring Veterans Day

Paul Rieckhoff reminds us about another King who marched in America: This time to honor our military veterans:
As vets, we need every American to have our backs. You don't have to be a veteran to support the new veterans movement. Alvin King knew that. He wasn't a veteran and he didn't do it alone. It took an entire groundswell of civilians and veterans alike. It's on each of us to build the movement he started back in Emporia, Kan. and take it all the way around the world. And unlike Alvin, we have social media tools and virtual communities to make our movement that much greater. And this year, it won't take more than a minute of your time to show your support and gratitude to these brave men and women. In just a few clicks you can march with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of American (IAVA) on Facebook or Twitter to show them that we've got their backs this Veterans Day.
It doesn't matter if you voted for the Green Party or the Tea Party, live in Boston or the Bayou; Veterans Day is about uniting as a country and supporting our nation's troops and veterans. We can turn the page on a divided America and unite the country on this important day.
I know Alvin King would be proud.
Say what you will about the Internet/blogosphere, but there are a lot of great and sometimes provocative pieces out there about the true meaning of Veterans Day. I would encourage you to read some of these and reflect:
Aaron Sorkin says bumper-sticker patriotism is no way to honor veterans.
Stu Bykofsky wonders why we don't give our veterans a day off today.
Colin Powell wonders why we ask more of our troops today when we did in World War II.
Lt. Dan Choi on the war that gay veterans are fighting at home.
Bob Kinder on the long road home.
Completely unrelated topic. If Obamacare is such a great thing, why have they given out 111 exceptions to businesses for it??? Ruby Tuesday, Jack in the Box, AETNA (aahahahah a health insurance company!!), Denny's, Dish Network, Cracker Barrel, CIGNA (another health insurance co), a bunch of unions, and a bunch of other "health" named companies. The Cleveland congressman took a deep breath and replied: "I did. And the rest of the account -- I didn't -- it was an unidentified flying object, OK? It's, like, it's unidentified. I saw something. Now, to answer your question, I'm moving my -- it's -- and I'm also going to move my campaign office to Roswell, New Mexico, and other one in Exeter, New Hampshire, OK? And also, you have to keep in mind that more -- that Jimmy Carter saw a UFO and also that more people in this country have seen UFOs than I think approve of George Bush's presidency."
WOW X 100 Personally, I'll take the bible guy over the UFO believer in my party. - Since it seems hip to call out congressmen, how about this diddy-----
-sniperaoo-
"According to the report today, MacLaine was delighted when "her close friend" Dennis Kucinich "revealed he believes in alien spacecraft in a recent interview. And the 73-year-old hopes his confession will prompt lawmakers to follow the lead of other countries by opening their U.F.O. files."
But wait, there's more---
Tim Russert asked: "Congressman Kucinich, I want to move to a different area, because this is a serious question. The godmother of your daughter, Shirley MacLaine, writes in her new book that you sighted a UFO over her home in Washington state ... [laughter] ... that you found the encounter extremely moving, that it was a 'triangular craft, silent and hovering,' that you 'felt a connection to your heart and heard directions in your mind.'
Now, did you see a UFO?"
Of course, this was in the debate for the Democrat nomination for President.
I want to thank our veterans and those currently serving to keep us safe and free. I appreciate Will acknowledging the day, and have nothing negative to say. God bless the USA! Bush3- SBVFT - Hope your dad enjoyed lunch. bird11

Is that the same company that recently bought Volvo? Les Ismore
Saw it Bird. No comment on the GM deal, been out of the loop for the most part the last couple of days. But yes, Obama & the Dems sure ain't perfect. Les Ismore
Not much one can say to this, really, except Wow!

Rep. John Shimkus is standing by a controversial comment that global warming isn’t something to worry about because God said he wouldn’t destroy the Earth after Noah’s flood.
The Illinois Republican running for the powerful perch atop the House Energy and Commerce Committee told POLITICO on Wednesday that his understanding of the Bible reaffirms his belief that government shouldn’t be in the business of trying to address rising greenhouse gas emissions.
“I do believe in the Bible as the final word of God,” Shimkus said. “And I do believe that God said the Earth would not be destroyed by a flood.

bird, I hadn't heard anything about that yet. From a quick read, it looks like MS and JPM underwrote it and aren't allocating shares to some of the brokerage houses. No idea why not. RG- Les - you should also feel free to comment on my 1:43p post. I know it doesn't involve Glen Beck or Sarah Palin....just the people you elected to run the country. bird11
- RG - wonder what your thoughts are on the GM IPO - seems small U.S. investors can't participate in the sale of the stock for the company they bailed out but the large institutional lenders (who the taxpayers also bailed out) can. Seems like this administration is doing a great job protecting the fat cats - while at the same time they scream about how rich they are.
.....but not to worry SAIC Motors will get their share of the IPO. I'm glad we bailout out GM for the Chinese to buy. bird11
Wow, Glenn Beck caught doctoring videos to prove his anti-semitic point. This guy and the nitwits that follow him are just incredible. Their hatred of Jews, the poor, blacks and just about everyone else not like him is despicable. Les Ismore
Another link for Bloated Billy Atkins who seems intent on parroting known anti-semite Glenn Beck's latest "theories" .
Palins top aid is on George Soros payroll.

This is sorta like getting blown out, yet still claiming you are the better team. "YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) -- President Barack Obama claimed a stronger hand on the world stage Friday despite electoral defeats at home, failure to get a free-trade agreement with South Korea and lackluster international support for his get-tough policy with China on trade and currency disputes."
RG
How often do you refresh your Glenn Beck search, TPS? RG
Sorry: http://mediamatters.org/research/201011110032 Talking point sleuth
Please note, Les, that the president of the ADL is decidedly not a "lib," and a big fan of Rupert Murdoch - yet still feels compelled to call out Beck.
Oh, and here's some more of Beck's lying about Soros. Now jump, RG,
http://mediamatters.org/research/201011110032jump. Talking point sleuth- {{snip}} David Wilder, the former White Sox director of player personnel, was indicted on federal fraud charges yesterday for allegedly accepting kickbacks from signing bonuses and contract buyouts, targeting players from impoverished parts of Latin America hungry to play in the United States.
Wilder and two former scouts for the team in Latin America are accused of accepting about $400,000 to secure 23 prospects from 2004 to 2008, according to the indictment released by the U.S. Attorney's office in Chicago.{{snip}}
I call on President Obama to publicly denounce the actions of his favorite team. Failure to do so will only leave me to conclude that he is a racist who advocates taking advantage of underpriviledged Latinos.
(I think I'm turning Liberal)
bird11 - SBVFT - I'd be the last to deny your free speech but, for me, I think my time is better spent praising veterans and thanking those who serve then trying to convince people to do the same. Enjoy lunch with your dad today - that's the important thing.

Congrats, RG. That's now the second time you showed you understood what comprises a "Mommy, mommy" post. Of course, the last time you immediately thereafter showed you were confused again, but you may be catching on. There's hope for you yet. Talking point sleuth
Say - Les, did you catch the Maddow/Stewart interview? Check it out. I think that Stewart absolutely nails it (even if he did ramble a bit). I'd be curious to know what you think. For example, that the whole "tea bag" thing was funny for about a day - and at this point is pretty much stooping to levels more likely to be inhabited by the Becks, Limbaughs, and bile.atkins' of the world. "Sloboat makes a great point - because, you know, he'd never politicize the memory of veterans, or, say, the death of Mary Jo Kapechne." Mommy, mommy, he did it first.

Sloboat makes a great point - because, you know, he'd never politicize the memory of veterans, or, say, the death of Mary Jo Kapechne.
I mean, his constant whining that libz hate the military is, in no way, politically based.
Right. Sloboat's level of Fraudytood remains unsurpassed. Talking point sleuth
Oh lord, les just got a new set of talking points. RG
Hey Bird, thanks for your comments. Chris is shipping out in January. Thanks for your thoughts, very much appreciated. Les Ismore
Hey Bloated Billy - Whats with the anti-Semitism? You must be watching Beck again. Even the Jewish Anti-Defamation League is calling your types of attacks (and Becks) pure anti-semitism. Your comments are CLEARLY anti-semitic.
"As many commentators have noted, Beck’s attacks have a distinctly anti-Semitic tone. Writing in the Daily Beast, Michelle Goldberg notes Beck’s episodes on Soros have a disturbing echo of historical anti-Semitic narratives of Jews controlling banking institutions in a shadowy plot for world domination:
In classic anti-Semitic narratives, Jews control both the elites and the masses; they’re responsible for the communist revolution and the speculative excesses of capitalism. Their goal is to undermine society so that they can take over. Through the lens of anti-Semitism, social division, runaway inflation, and moral breakdown all make sense because they all have the same cause. Nazi propaganda called Jews drahtzieher—wire-pullers. They constitute a power above and beyond ordinary government authority. “There is a super-government which is allied to no government, which is free from them all, and yet which has its hand in them all,” Henry Ford wrote in The International Jew.
Yesterday, the Anti-Defamation League harshly criticized Beck for his portrayal of Soros’ past in holocaust-era Germany as “completely inappropriate and offensive.” Likewise, Simon Greer, president and CEO of Jewish Funds for Justice, also slammed Beck: “His portrayal of Soros today as the ‘Puppet Master,’ as the special was called, evokes anti-Semitic stereotypes from the ‘devaluer of many currencies’ to ‘advocate for one world government’ from ‘anti-American’ to ‘thinks he’s smarter than the rest of us.’”
Les Ismore- bill, SBVFT, et al - I don't know why you guys are so concerned. The one thing Mulchay said that was very true is that veterans didn't do what they did for anyones thanks - they did it and do it out of a sense of duty and honor. I believe they would rather receive a sincere thank you than a forced thank you. The same goes for everyone who protects us be they military, firefighters, or law enforcement - a thank you any day of the year is appreciated and IMHO appropriate. bird11

bird11 TO: Les and his family members, PJ's son - and I think PJ also, and to everyone else here at Attytood who served our country. Thank you and Happy Veterans' Day. Gob bless all of you and may those who are still out on the battlefield return home safe and soon.
bird11
Les -- thank you for you and your family's service. Your thought on the hate on the site, however is ludicrous. How many times have I pointed out where the liberals on the blog have hated on a good 30-50% of the country? IggleFan68
"The only hating on this site is the wingers hatered for their fellow Americans." Of course. Names like wingnut, regressive, and teabaKKKer are terms of endearment.
RG
I am a veteran and I am a liberal. My nephew who died in Iraq is a liberal. My other nephew who is shipping off to Afghanistan in Jamuary is a liberal and even worked on Brown's campaign in California. My father, a WWII veteran was a liberal. So please Swifty McVeteran, cut the bull. The only hating on this site is the wingers hatered for their fellow Americans. Les Ismore
test Les Ismore- why quibble over honoring vets. we all owe them respect no matter what our political leanings. Miss M.
- An unsurprising post. Glass half full, sackcloth and ashes. Rather than a tribute to those who serve, and celebating what they accomplished, our intrepid blogger whines about what he thinks is REALLY important. As usual, classless. georgel
the keyboard cowards doing what they do best.....talk! chasing history- "so I wouldn't have to look at the anger and vitriol you spew every time something is written that is remotely intelligent" Remotely intelligent pretty much sums up Will Bunch's blogs.
- "I wish there was a way to block comments so I wouldn't have to look at the anger and vitriol you spew every time something is written that is remotely intelligent or that challenges your narrow worldview in the least." Gotta love how the lefties advocate free speech. Here, jojostarbuck, is a blog you can truly enjoy. No evil rightwingers here. www.shangrilablog.com Try it. You'll love it.
This would have been (may still be?) a day to thank a vet instead of calling people names and insulting people on this blog. Give it a rest. Thank you to all of the men and women who have served and are serving in our military! landscape- "I'm offended by your oral diarrhea every time I read this blog but I defended your right to express your opinion (no matter how ignorant) in the jungles and rice paddies of Vietnam. Today of all days, I feel no qualms expressing my true feelings to you. I had friends who died to defend your rights and, for them, let me say,why not STFU?" So BigDaddy3150, in your world, only speech you like is allowed on Veterans Day. Hypocrite.
- Let me get this straight. American veterans are being dishonored by liberals not posting thanks on Attytood. They've been glued to this website all day, passing up local ceremonies, parades, and gatherings at the VFW, waiting for the libs to say thanks, and we let them down. Luckily our patriots are here to monitor this for our millions of veterans crushed by our insensitivity. They should really be proud of themselves for their vigilance in protecting the honor of veterans. And anyway, it's a whole lot cheaper than protecting their well-being the other 364 days of the year.
This vet is conservative. So are most, if not all of the vets, I know. Even the draftees.
Just depends on the company you keep. AngryWhiteMale- Why so tough on Will guys??? He posted a nice piece on Veterans' Day and some of the links - I particularly liked the Kinder article. bird11
As always Will, you swing and miss on Veterans day, once again. jimmymack- Cicero - I think that may be the singularly most disrespectful thing I have ever read on this blog. By that logic what war in the last 150 years was worth fighting? I have a family member serving in Afghanistan right now - a brave and intelligent young man who made his own decision to join the service. Your comment disrespect every man and woman serving our country. bird11
- SBVFT - Will do - and please thank your dad for me. bird11
Sending your soldiers off to meat grinders that offered NO threat to this country, like Iraq, is not "honoring" your veterans. The soldiers that died in Iraq died for nothing. Sorry if the truth hurts - but that's the truth. The bodies we're planting in Afghanistan are dying for nothing. That also is the truth. Oh, sorry - they are dying for some hefty profits. Both wars are shams, have nothing to do with securing this country. It's a shame our soldiers are paying the ultimate price for ultimate nothing. THAT'S the truth. CiceroSpuriousDeodatus

Comment removed.- SBVFT - my dad is a soon to be an 87 year old WWII vet - U.S. Navy served on the U.S.S. Guest (destroyer) - he and I went to mass together this morning and I'm taking him to dinner tonight for Veterans' Day. Dad and his 5 brothers who all served (signed up 12/7/41) would definitely be classified as conservatives - and dad is not fonda Hanoi Jane. bird11

No, but putting on an enemy uniform and pretending to shoot Americans out of the sky in a propoganda piece does dishonor veterans. She will be invited to a VFW hall real soon, I'm sure. Ramon
Malacy
A majority of the vets I know are conservative, yes. Ramon- “Just the other day I over heard some vets saying how much they loved liberal icon Jane Fonda. Absolutely." Well, as much as the right wants to rewrite history, many vets loved Jane Fonda. I think all "I love vets more than libs do” morons should watch the documentary "Sir, No Sir!" Being against an unjust and evil war does NOT equal dishonoring its veterans. Hamlet
- probably not Malachy - if he did he would say a good number of the vets he knows are conservatives. bird11
bird11 - Handnik knows your family? Malachy- SBVFT - I actually believe Handnik's statement. I doubt that Handnik spend much time with conservatives so the only people he knows are liberals - most of veterans he knows are liberals, most of the lawyers he knows are liberals, most of the sex offenders he knows are liberals, most of the drug addicts he knows are liberals, most of the (FILL IN THE BLANK) he knows are liberals. bird11
bill.atkins, -No problem. Anything for such a fine fellow. Malachy
Ramon - Brilliant!! Got any more witticisms? In your world are vets conservatives? Malachy

Oops, that should read "...why are ~you~ here doing so"? legatus
Just the other day I over heard some vets saying how much they loved liberal icon Jane Fonda. Absolutely. Ramon
jojostarbuck says: "Every time I read a Will Bunch article, I CRINGE to look at the comments posted by the know-nothing jerks..." and then he follows with: "If you hate Bunch's blog so much, why are you here..." So jojo, the obvious question is, if you cringe to look at the comments, why are here doing so? legatus- Nice to see cranky old man getting some smackdown. You know who you are cranky old man. potus
PAEnglish - From what depths of a disesed mind do you dredge up the nonsense you spew? I'm a vet, and a Liberal as are every member of my family that have served this country in time of war from the Revolution to the Gulf. We don't want, nor need thanks from folks with such empty minds. No vet does. Keep your thanks. Malachy
Every time I read a Will Bunch article, I CRINGE to look at the comments posted by the know-nothing jerks whose only goal in commenting is to trumpet your ignorance and tell Will what an moron he is. I hoped - foolishly - reading a piece on Veterans Day (ABOUT veterans, no less) would maybe keep the rudeness at bay. What a bunch of classless people. If you hate Bunch's blog so much, why are you here EVERY DAY commenting on it? I wish there was a way to block comments so I wouldn't have to look at the anger and vitriol you spew every time something is written that is remotely intelligent or that challenges your narrow worldview in the least. jojostarbuck
Thats the best you can do Will ? , most veterans I know and I'm betting I know a damn sight more than handnik beleive liberals hate them, and the lack of posts by known liberals on this site thanking vets just proves that theory. PAEnglish
Hey bill.. You have no idea what will would do and your ignorant opinion, and those of your ilk, have been played out here for far too long. And if you are offended, I don't care. I'm offended by your oral diarrhea every time I read this blog but I defended your right to express your opinion (no matter how ignorant) in the jungles and rice paddies of Vietnam. Today of all days, I feel no qualms expressing my true feelings to you. I had friends who died to defend your rights and, for them, let me say,why not STFU? BigDaddy3150
Most veterans I know are liberal. HandNik- It takes a lot of stones for the ultra-left Huffington Post to lecture anyone on how to honor our Veterans. jmc
Notice the GLARING absence of THANKING OUR VETERANS for their service to the country in this post. Nice, Will. Since you didn't do it, I will: Thank you to all who serve and have served in our Armed Forces for your service to all Americans. IggleFan68
