There's an interesting item on the Editor and Publisher blog about an upcoming event at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, a Robert Redford retrospective that will include a showing of "All the President's Men" followed by a panel discussion with Redford, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. It led me to check out the schedule for the whole event, and I was struck by the synopsis for one of my favorite political movies, "The Candidate."
This Oscar-winning satire skewers the American political machine. Redford stars as a handsome young politician who compromises his liberal ideals in order to win a senate race he was never supposed to have a shot at.
That would never happen in real life. Unless the guy ran for president.
i like this candidate from long time. Resveratrol (HTML deleted) mafalda

Comment removed.- Liberal ideals really don't have a strong foundation to begin with, so they are easily compromised. jmc
How shallow does ones understanding of politics and history have to be, to continually cite movies, music, and other journalists in an attempt to put current events into perspective? No wonder the Inky/DN salivates over Bonnie and Clyde, and bad cop stories. E Plebnista

Come on, jmc. At least our ideals aren't, "Let's get back to the old days when things were so good, and let's not have anything to do with modern times or improvement." HandNik
"At least our ideals aren't, 'Let's get back to the old days when things were so good, and let's not have anything to do with modern times or improvement'." Sure they are...unless you are advocating improvements such as school choice vouchers, stricter limitations on abortion, change in affirmative action rules, change in rules concerning religion in the public sphere, stricter immigration control, etc. Seems to me that the liberal position on many issues is "Let's stick to the old days, and let's not have anything to do with modern times or improvement." legatus
"Kind of like George Bush, empty suit empty head but enough morons to give him 8 years." It's amazing how far President Obama's popularity has fallen. Tango has fallen in line with many of his ideological brethren in comparing Obama to Bush, who they ostensibly hated as a President. legatus
