UPDATED: Rooting for a couple guys named Larry and Bruce

POSTED: Sunday, February 1, 2009, 6:52 PM

Yes, I'm rooting for the Arizona Cardinals -- and hoping the first Larry and then Bruce will make the next four hours entertaining.  As I write this, the Cardinals may be getting some life from a goal line stand and a successful challenge (it's 3-0 Steelers).

Springsteen song predictions: "Born in the USA," "Working on a Dream," "Born to Run," "The Rising." Yours?

You're probably not here, but if you are, discuss the game... and the Springsteen.

UPDATE: Well, that was the best 12-minute rock concert I've ever seen. OK, it was a little over-the-top campy at times, but hey, it's the Super Bowl, you know. (As you can see I went 2-for-4 on the song set...."Glory Days" was my No. 5 choice, honest :-) )Good move to keep it short on the new CD, although "Working on a Dream" may yet grow on me. Two songs from the "Born to Run" album -- this guy knows where his bread is buttered. So who was that blonde playing guitar next to Patti?

Apparently there's a football competition as well. Arizona...oy. That 100-yard INT return by Steelers' James Harrison really was one for the ages. I think Warner & Co, have one comeback left in 'em, however..

UPDATE II: What a finish! That was "the greatest Super Bowl ever" -- the third one in the last decade. The Harrison run, Warner and Fitzgerald, and finally that unbelievable pitcture-perfect catch by Holmes to win it. Well, my designated team for the night lost in the end, but I did receive some partial vindication -- for writing this last week:

I like rooting for an underdog, and here's a franchise that hasn't won anything since '47 -- that's pretty "under." More importantly, the Cardinals have been playing the most exciting football around for the last month. Since I can't watch my fantasy of a Bruce Springsteen concert wrapped inside an Eagles' world championship, I'll settle instead for three hours of the electric Larry Fitzgerald.

These cynics putting the game down are the same folks who thought it was a joke that the St, Louis Rams and the Tennessee Titans were in the Super Bowl, right up until the kickoff of one of the greatest games (and greatest final play) in NFL history. They're also the same people who told us don't even bother watching the lowly Giants up against the invincible Patriots this time last year.

You know what: Shut up and watch the freakin' game. If you're right (for once) and it really does stink, you have five long months to write about it.

"Really, MSL, where the heck were the safeties? He went the distance without even having to avoid anybody." I'd say that was good play calling by the offense. The Steelers were matching up Polamalu on Fitgerald one-on-one, with help from Clark over the top, for most of the first half. This effectively negated the deep ball to Fitzgerald. However, in the second half they entrusted him to single coverage by Ike Taylor, who was trying to force everything to the sidelines on that 4th quarter drive. When the Cardinals saw this, they countered by throwing the shorter routes across the middle. Good offensive strategy....good results.

"I would have expected a mutli play drive, like the one before, but giving up a 64 yard TD on a short throw was bizarre." . . . . The irony being that it gave PGH's offense just enough time to mount the winning drive.

From what I remember, those Eagle teams in the 80's fell behind in the first half and the offense couldn't catch up. Great defenses (and QB's) are good to have, but when you have mental midgets like Ryan and Kotite at head coach, that's a big hole to dig out of.

SOMETIMES geat defenses win. Other times its a more balanced team. How far would the 91 Eagles have gone if Cunningham and McMahon didn't get injured. Number one across the board in defensive stats. If you have a great defense, you may be able to get away with a caretaker QB, but its much easier with a top QB.

RG, over the long run, defense wins. If AZ's defense didn't gets its act together at the end of the season, they would'nt have gotten to the Super Bowl. If the Steelers' defense isn't the best in the league, there's a good chance they don't make it past the Ravens. Those last minute drives sure were exciting, but how about the 14 point swing at the end of the first half? Forgot about that, already? Does anybody remember what happened to Joe Montana when he faced great defensive teams?

Here is an interesting question. What quarterback, if any, would you take over Big Ben? He already has 2 SB rings in his first five years, and he is a great leader. When the Steelers got the ball with 2:30 left in the fourth, I had no doubt that Ben was going to lead them down the field. When the game is on the line, I'm not sure that there is any qb I'd rather have.

Steve, I won't dispute it was a blown play by the safeties. I will note that Warner's quick read and Fitzgerald's speed took advantage of it, something a great offense should be expected to do in that situation. Overall, AZ's high-rated offense was held to 23 points against a team that allowed only 21.7 average per game during the season, so I don't think the balance of nature was upset too much, and in the end the team with the best defense did win the championship.

"Quarterbacks don't win championships, defenses do." Did Pittsburghs defense march down the field for the game winning TD? Its not an either/or proposition, it helps to have both.

Really, MSL, where the heck were the safeties? He went the distance without even having to avoid anybody. In my book, that's a blown play by the defense. I would have expected a mutli play drive, like the one before, but giving up a 64 yard TD on a short throw was bizarre. Half-empty my foot. Quarterbacks don't win championships, defenses do.

"How on Earth could a great defensive team like the Steelers give up that touchdown to Fitzgerald?" . . . . SteveMG, is the glass always half-empty for you? A great defense met a great offense yesterday. Something had to give, either way.

As far as I'm concerned, both teams choked. How on Earth could a great defensive team like the Steelers give up that touchdown to Fitzgerald? Then the Cardinal defense comes out and makes a hero out of Roethlesberger. And all I hear about on the radio os Donavan McNabb. Pathetic.

The new album is available everywhere. The Walmart-only album is a special greatest hits album. Bruce has apologized for his mistake in dealing with Walmart.

Great concert, great game (although too many penalties).
