Philadelphia flunks Reid-ing comprehension

POSTED: Sunday, December 30, 2012, 10:36 PM

The arrival of Andy Reid in Philadelphia some 14 years ago was shrouded in mystery. What was it about this obscure and unknown 40-year-old assistant — a former college offensive lineman who inexplicably coached quarterbacks in Green Bay — that led Eagles’ owner Jeffrey Lurie to leapfrog Reid over all the better known candidates?

Once here, it was as if there were two Andy Reids. There was the coach that Philadelphians saw with their own eyes, who gave inarticulate press conferences and occasionally botched games with his poor clock management.

Somehow this same individual won more games than any other head coach in Eagles’ history while taking the Birds to the playoffs nine times, including one (losing) Super Bowl. Something happened between Reid and his players that fans couldn’t see. But what?

On Monday, Reid’s tenure as longest-serving coach in team history ends. To paraphrase Joni Mitchell, we really don’t know Andy, at all.

Coaches and players need to come together in just the right way to make a winning football team. He had a fantastic D Coord and some great coaches early on plus some quality people playing for him. They did it right and got results but failed to win in key spots late. As coaches moved on and players got old, AR struggled to replace them; only the expectations of the local fan base remained high. I do often laugh when I hear people complaining that the Eagles have not found the next Brian Dawkins as if players like him are easy to find. It is cyclic, and AR's run is complete. Yesterday, the players left the bus running when they got to stadium. Clearly they were in no mood to play 'pro' football and most of them should be ashamed to collect their final checks. There are many athletes that play professionally, but not all of them know what it means to be a 'pro'. Yesterday's game was a good gauge of who the real Pro's are and there were very few. So, that's what happened IMO - AR ran out of real PRO's in terms of skill and character both in his coaching staff and his player roster. From there it went down hill fast (4 - 12 fast and you can make the argument they were fortunate to win the 4 they did!).

Andy will work again somewhere next season. It will be interesting if he can build a winning program again. IMO he benifited from a great D coordinator and a very good quarterback. It might have been a more pleasant tenure if he had only invested in a stud WR about 8 years ago.

Winningest coach in Eagles history...a title that is both impressive and lame at the same time.

As evidenced here, fans can't even give a bit of credit - he benefited from a D coordinator, and QB. Yesterday, in a CSN poll, something like 40% of fans gave Reid an 'F' for his tenure. Think of that. This year was an F, an historically awful season. But an F is ludicrous. That's how high the expectations had become - win the SB --- or you get an F. From 1967, when the NFC East was formed, until Reid's first year (1999), the Eagles had won two Division championships. The Eagles won six under Reid. Yes, Divisional championships aren't the ultimate goal, but still, it gives perspective.

The high point of the Andy Reid era was the play before Mcnabb ran out of gas in the Super Bowl. Things really went down hill after Jim Johnson died. They also got some bad Karma after they let Dawkins sign with the Broncos.

Anyway, Will. on that question that you asked last week regarding whether the OWS gang should arm themselves against government tyranny. I think you've got your answer. From the NY Post aka "conservative Fantasy land", and hyperlinked at the Drudge Report:

"Police also found a flare launcher, which is a commercial replica of a grenade launcher; a modified 12 gauge Mossberg 500 shotgun; ammo; and nine high-capacity rifle magazines, the sources said" . . . . . The NRA would be proud, no?

So the regime will change, but the fans will stay the same. The upcoming fourth pick is crucial. Fans will want something s2xy, like T'eo, or some big WR, and they'll boo if and when the Eagles select Joeckel. I'm grateful for the tenure, but I am really looking forward to a change in the philosophy. I just a bigger, meaner defense is that too much to ask?

Reid did a great job turning around the organization. He especially excelled at hiring great assistant coaches like Johnson, Harbaugh and Childress. He replaced them with Casteo, April and Mournigwhig. Nuff said.....good luck Andy!
