"My readers know more than I do."

-- media-reform guru Dan Gillmor.

Help! My readers think that the best pizza in Philadelphia is...Pizza Hut! You see, there was this thing called the 2008-2009 Daily News People Paper Awards. I'm not sure exactly how the "the people" made their choices known (this thing seems to be only in print with no online component...how 1963 of them), but on the issue of "best pizza," Philadelphia has spoken, and the answer is that chain that brought the pizza to your basic non-ethnic heartland communities in Kansas and such, Pizza Hut.

They must really be bummed out at Papa John's.

Other famed Philly institutions that won 2008-09 Daily News People Paper Awards include the best family restaurant, Olive Garden, as well as Ruby Tuesday (best salad bar) and Dunkin Donuts (guess). As for Pizza Hut being Philly's best pizza, Mr. Tacconelli, Mr. Celebre, Mr. Marra and quite a few others must be -- depending on their condition -- shedding a tear or rolling over in their grave right now.

UPDATE: Here's a slightly more informed discussion of the topic...

Disregarding the inane comments that have already been posted, the whole thing is just an advertising gimmick. Businesses put ads in the paper to solicit votes, and those that got people to clip out the coupons and vote were "winners." It's utterly worthless as an actual guide to the best of anything.

What a process...reminds me of some of the Democratic presidential caucuses back in the spring.

This doesn't mean Pizza Hut is popular, just that it's everywhere. Within half a mile of my apartment are three local pizza shops and one chain restaurant. If you surveyed my neighborhood on their favorite pizza, most would probably pick one or another of the local places, and a few would name the chain. Go across town and get the same result, but this time the results are for three *different* local pizza places and a different outlet of the same chain. Add it all up, and the chain may end up with 30% of the total vote, but the local-pizza lovers' votes are split among a couple dozen places. It's kind of as if one political party had one presidential candidate and the other one had a different candidate in each state. The national candidate doesn't need a big % of the vote to outpoll second place.

I love Pizza Hut, but I used to live in Media, and Little Anthony's on State St. is the best. Every time I'm back in Media, I have to stop.

Little Anthony's is terrible. La Forno at State and 252 is infinitely better. As to Pizza Hut being best pizza in Philly, this is what happens when the Sarah Palin voting bloc votes for their food choices.

Santucci's in the northeast is the best pizza I've ever had. Friends of mine have driven over there from jersey just to pick up a square pie.

I also heard that Budweiser is the best beer available around here and Wa-Wa makes the best cheesesteaks in the area.

Pizza Hut...the best pizza?!?! This is truly a sign of the apocalypse. Whenever I get back to Philly, I try to stop at Tony's on Frankford and Robbins. They are awesome....as is Cacia's in south Philly, near Methodist Hospital. Santucci's is excellent too...well, at least the original Santucci's in Juniata was. I don't think they are still in that location...I've never been in the newer locations. Pizza Hut, or any of the chains for that matter, barely qualify as pizza.

Legatus, the Santucci's I normally go to is near Grant and Bustleton...I also saw one down in Wildwood over the summer. I didn't get a chance to go in and see if it was the same place, but I think the sign looked the same....If I'm going down near Frankford and Robbins I always go a block further up Franford and go into the Grey Lodge for a couple of cold ones (one of the best hidden beer gems in the city for any fellow beer snobs).

I know the place you're talking about Cap'n. I have a sibling who lives not too far away in Mayfair who happens to be a beer afficionado. We've been to the Grey Lodge. You're right...it's a gem.
