Earning that Nobel Peace Prize after the fact

POSTED: Thursday, August 19, 2010, 10:59 PM

The Obama administration works to halt a new war in the Middle East -- at least for now:

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration, citing evidence of continued troubles inside Iran’s nuclear program, has persuaded Israel that it would take roughly a year — and perhaps longer — for Iran to complete what one senior official called a “dash” for a nuclear weapon, according to American officials.

White House officials said they believe the assessment has dimmed the prospect that Israel would pre-emptively strike against the country’s nuclear facilities within the next year, as Israeli officials have suggested in thinly veiled threats.

For years, Israeli and American officials have debated whether Iran is on an inexorable drive toward a nuclear bomb and, if so, how long it would take to produce one. A critical question has been the time it would take Tehran to convert existing stocks of low-enriched uranium into weapons-grade material, a process commonly known as “breakout.”

It would be nice if the White House could push to wrap up Obama's first term by actually preventing a war instead of inventing one like the Reagan administration did in Grenada in 1983. Remember those 50,000 troops that we still have in Iraq? They're not involved in combat now -- but they might be if a war erupts between Israel and Iran.

Have a great and nuke-free weekend.

PhillyJeffSr- good initial post. You asked valid, incisive, relevant questions. But be careful cuz people don't like your kind on these here comment threads. As you can see it's more akin to an elementary school playground. You might be interested in *The Politics of Anti-Semitism* by Jeffrey St. Clair. It discusses the USS Liberty as well. "The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable..." H.L. Mencken

Billreilly, if Israel does invade with ground forces who do you think will defend and support the Israelis. Do you think Americans should die for an invading force of another government? No matter what the media says, Iran is not a threat to the continental United States. Where you as adament about destroying Russia during the Cold War? They were described in the media as much the same as the Iranians. Did you ever read what Stalin did before, during and after the war? But all we hear about is Hitler. You say I hate Jews, I do not. Honestly I don't even think about the Jews as a faith, nor Christians or Muslims. I look at people and movements that may have an effect on the United States. Call me crazy but I happen to be one of the few who still believe that the Constitution was and is a brilliant document that had the potential to create a "more perfect Union" but has been b@st@rd!zed by the people elected to protect it. An honest debate should be engaged without the expected attempt at labeling me an anti-semite. I think they are legitimate questions that I am CURIOUS about. Not obsessed, just curious if others think the same way and if not, why.

You're welcome. Although ironically, Mencken is on record as being slightly antisemitic, but in the final analysis of all his writings I think he acquits himself. Reflective of the era I suppose. Just the bronze??? I'll try to do better next time. Have a good weekend.

The fact is if Israel attacks Iran in anyway it will probably start a much bigger war which would include US troops in Iraq as well as NATO troops in Afganistan and probably lead to a much wider conflict. At some point in the future war with islam is inevitable, a war that will make WWII look like a minor disagreement a war incidentaly the muslim faith beleive will happen as its in the Koran.

Israel attacked a nuke plant in Syria in 2007 without starting a larger war. Also, I think billreily was being sarcastic about a ground invasion of Iran by Israel. I think:) An air attack is the way to go and go soon. Netanyahu has the cojon-es to do it and probably cares very little about what our govt. has to say about it after the way he was treated by this White House earlier this year, imo.

"... Peace in our Time..." The great Neville Chamberlain. Exumbris, bronze for being third from the top of the door. Gold would have been the Thomas Jefferson quote about tyranny and silence. But that's for another day when I am not an anti-semite. Ah, the accusations preventing intelligent discussion...

That so-called "nuke plant" in Syria, you do realize they had barely gotten past pouring the concrete footings right? If you think about it another way, why would Israel bother to bomb a building that was a year away from even being completely built, let alone producing any type of fuel and not go into Iran when they have multiple facilities capable of enriching uranium. Hmm... Why?

philsr, exactly. That is why I think Israel will and should bomb the bejesus out of Iran's nuclear facilities. In fact, Netenyahu as PM is duty bound to do so, if he takes the threats of Iran and its president seriously. Which he no doubt does.
