Also victorious last night: Homophobia

POSTED: Wednesday, November 3, 2010, 11:37 AM

Wake up, America:

All three Iowa Supreme Court justices up for retention election have been ousted from the bench.

Around 54 percent of Iowans voted not to retain each of the three judges: Supreme Court Chief Justice Marsha Ternus and associate justices Michael J. Streit and David L. Baker. The campaign for the judges ouster was based on the court’s unanimous 2009 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in Iowa.

There were 74 judges, including three Supreme Court justices, on the ballot Tuesday. Only the Supreme Court justices, however, came anywhere close to being removed from the bench.

The highly charged campaign featured more than $1 million in spending against the judges from national anti-gay organizations like the Mississippi-based American Family Association, Washington, D.C.-based Family Research Council, Arizona-based Alliance Defense Fund, Georgia-based Faith & Freedom Coalition and New Jersey-based National Organization for Marriage. The campaign culminated in a 20-city bus tour across Iowa.

The groups pushing for ouster promised that this was simply the first battle in a nationwide war against gay marriage and gay rights.

But, but....didn't they hear Jon Stewart's moving speech on Saturday?

Will, you do realize, right, that both BO and John Kerry and many other otherwise lib Ds are against same-sex marriage, going only as far as gay civil unions. Are they homophobes too?

If anyone woke up this morning and thought the left was going to take a different tone, or moderate a bit, I give you Will's post.

---"Opposing gay marriage is not equivalent to homophobia." Agreed, depending on the rationale, but the groups that forced these justices out also have stated they want to roll back "gay rights." That is unconscionable.---
Agreed. But the larger issue as I see it is that we need to permanently separate the two meanings of the word "marriage". "Marriage" as a religious sacrament should not be the provence of anyone other than the individual churches, either pro or con. For any purposes other than the religious one the term "civil union" should be used, and any secular policies based on that (such as tax purposes or insurance purposes or inheritance purposes, etc) should be the same regardless of the sex of the couple. The most obvious precedent, and a long-standing one, is that of divorce; the secular establishment recognizes it whether a particular church does or not.

For example, I think there are people who've been raised from birth in religion that teach that marriage is between a man and a woman and who are perfectly tolerant toward gays and support gay rights including civil unions -- not sure how you would call such a person a "homophobe." But the groups that campaigned against the Iowa judges are rooted deeply in homophobia, and they used fear and prejudice against gays to gain votes and money, etc., and their agenda is to wipe out 40 years of progress on gay rights. Which is why what they accomplished was a victory for homophobia.

I have no idea why my comments were repeated in my post - I certainly didn't write it that way. I have seen that happen several times over the last few days. A bug in the software, I guess.

{{{---}}} Are they homophobes too? {{{---}}} Maybe or maybe not. But here's what's clear; they're politicians who are supporting, for political expediency, policies that are based on homophobic rationale.

Interesting - under the "new" style view the comments are repeated, inder the "old" style view they are not. This software truly works in mysterious ways.

Maybe not. Maybe such a person could be fully accepting of a gay person; but their belief s based on a principle of discrimination, the denial of rights to some people that are granted to others, purely on the basis of their sexual orientation Non-gays should be able to get married, gay people shouldn't. So while I would argue that while they may not be a homophobe per se, they are supporting policies that are rooted in homophobia. One can hold racist/sexist/homophobic/islamophobic/anti-Semitic views without earning the general characteristic of being a racist/sexist/homophobe/islamophobe/anti-Semite. Take Juan Williams as an example. He may not be an Islamophobe, but his comments were Islamophobic. At least his rationale for holding Islamophobic views have a tiny shred of credibility, which can't be said for the notion that somehow gays getting married will affect the marriages of non-gays.

TPS, that's quite a gossamer-thin distinction. If one uses a "homophobic rationale" on one subject, marriage, doesn't that make that person "homopnobic" as to that subject? Being a politician doesn't or shouldn't change that. Btw, I am in favor of gay marriage.

Are you saying that because sometimes you might incorrectly judge someone on the basis of their holding "liberal" viewpoints, you are therefore an irrational ideologue?

PJ, don't ask for logical consistency. TPS, Will, and others toss around words like homophobe, racist, etc so much that they've lost their meaning. All you'll get is a long winded, tortured explanation why their guys aren't homophobic, per se, even though the end results of their beliefs/actions are the same..
