Kick of the Month: Restore the Roxy
A legendary Philadelphia Theatre has dreams of becoming more than just a deteriorating piece of history, thanks to the good people at PFS.
The Roxy has become a historic staple in the Rittenhouse Square community of Philadelphia since it's opening in 1975. The humble 2-theatre building, known for showcasing independent films, has had its ups, but mostly downs, over the past few decades. It has threatened to close on several occasions due to popularization of larger movie complexes and having to compete with commercial Hollywood blockbusters. Unfortunately, in September of 2012 the doors were locked shut waiting for its demise as a historical landmark.
Thanks to the good, passionate people at the Philadelphia Film Society, this legendary cultural hub will not go to waste. PFS has launched a Kickstarter to help raise a portion of their $600,000 estimated costs to reopen the Roxy Theatre in Spring of this year. With that budget in mind, the collective's goals are to completely renovate the space with modern appliances, equipment & decor, screen festival-type films yearlong, implement film education programs and host events for film lovers across the region.
