Boys' Hoops: NE's Stern "fine" after falling ill

After falling ill during Sunday's All-Star Labor Basketball Classic at his school, Northeast boys' basketball coach Ira Stern was released from the hospital Monday afternoon following an overnight stay.

Stern, also a math teacher, collapsed during halftime of the exhibition contest between a media squad and union team. Carted off on a stretcher and taken to an area hospital, he underwent a series of tests, including an MRI, CT scan, and EKG.

"I'm fine," Stern said Monday evening. "I'll probably be back in school tomorrow."

Stern said he was suffering from bronchitis last week, was taking several medications, and had a fever Saturday night. Of the medical tests, he said, "It showed nothing."

Stern was busy selling hot dogs during the games at Northeast.
