Basketball: Schalick's Holloway out with broken arm

In a development that could have major implications for the South Jersey Group 1 basketball tournament, Schalick senior center Rashaan Holloway suffered a broken left arm in a game against Triton on Tuesday night.

Schalick coach Eric Cassidy said Wednesday that Holloway's prognosis is unclear.

Cassidy said Holloway would see an orthopedic specialist on Thursday morning.

Holloway went to the emergency room after Triton's 73-46 win over Triton on Tuesday and was told that he had a fractured elbow and would likely be out for 4-6 weeks.

Cassidy said that diagnosis would be superceded by the recommendation of a specialist.

"He's a great kid with a great future so we're not going to do anything to put that in jeopardy," Cassidy said.

Cassidy said Holloway was going for a dunk when he was fouled by a Triton player and landed on his bottom and then on his left (non-shooting) arm.

"I've watched the tape about 100 times," Cassidy said.

Cassidy said he thought it was possible that Holloway would be able to return for the state tournament but that the situation would be clearer after the examination by the orthopedic specialist on Thursday morning.

The 6-foot-9 Holloway is averaging 20.5 points. He has signed to attend Massachusetts on a basketball scholarship.

Holloway has led Schalick to a 14-2 record. The Cougars have clinched the No. 1 seed in the S.J. 1 tournament.

"We still have some time until the playoffs and we're the '1' (seed) and we're in good shape in the division," Cassidy said. "We have good senior leadership. We still have a lot of talent. Some other guys are going to have to step up and we'll see how they respond to adversity."

In addition to Schalick, Pitman, Paulsboro and Penns Grove loom as strong contenders for the South Jersey Group 1 title.

Pitman, which projected as the favorite in the preseason, also has been dealing with injury issues as senior guard Eric Stafford, a Lafayette recruit, has missed time with concussion symptoms as well as a sprained ankle.

Paulsboro is the two-time defending champion, while Penns Grove rates as a darkhorse contender based on impressive wins over Pitman (Pitman later won a rematch) and Delsea.
