Field hockey: Moorestown beats Shawnee, 3-2

By Phil Anastasia

Monica Hernick made 16 saves and Alexa Massa scored the game-winner on a penalty stroke as Moorestown beat Shawnee 3-2 Monday in a field hockey clash of unbeatens.

Alex O'Donnell scored two goals for Moorestown, which improved to 5-0.

Julie Duncan scored both goals for Shawnee, which fell to 5-1.

"This means so much to us," said Hernick, a senior. "We've had this rivalry for as long as we can remember. Since the preaseason, we've been thinking about this game."

It was Moorestown's second straight win over Shawnee. Before that, the Renegades beat the Quakers seven times in a row.

"We played hard all the way through," Shawnee senior midfielder Sophia Miller said. "We're going to gain experience from this game."

Shawnee out a lot of pressure on Hernick but the Moorestown goalie turned back most of the Renegades' shots.

Shawnee took leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but each time Moorestown answered with a goal by O'Donnell.

With 9:26 remaining in a 2-2 game, Massa was awarded a penalty stroke.

She made the shot but after a timeout, the officials ruled that the ball had been placed in an improper spot before the stoke.

So Massa had to line up and try again. She scored again.

"It didn't bother me," Massa said of the replay. "I just was going to do the same thing."
