Football: Penns Grove's Robertson: My team will be OK

By Phil Anastasia

Penns Grove senior two-way star Anthony Robertson said Saturday that the Red Devils still can win the South Jersey Group 1 title without him.

"I'm going to do whatever I can to help the coaches and players out," said Robertson, who learned on Wednesday that he would miss his senior season with a knee injury.

Robertson said an MRI revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament and damaged meniscus in his right knee.

"He (the doctor) told me if it was just the meniscus that I would be back in a month," Robertson said. "But it was the ACL, too."

Robertson said he will undergo surgery Sept. 19.

Robertson suffered the injury in a non-contact drill in practice.

Penns Grove, the defending S.J. 1 champion, was the favorite to win the title again this season.

The Red Devils still have plenty of talent but will miss Robertson, who led South Jersey in scoring last season with 236 points (35 TDs, 13 2-point conversions).

Robertson also was a top linebacker who made 80 tackles last season and scored five defensive touchdowns.

"I'm trying to stay positive and support my team", Robertson said. "I know I'm going to play football again. I just want to make sure my team takes care of business this season."
