Carpenter Cup Classic: Jersey Shore blasts Inter-Ac/Indy

Boosted by a strong effort from catcher Matt Thaiss, Jersey Shore racked up 16 hits and thumped Inter-Ac/Independents, 13-1, Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the Carpenter Cup Classic baseball tournament.

Thaiss, from Jackson Memorial, went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs at Richie Ashburn Field in FDR Park. He had an RBI single in a six-run third inning and a two-run home run to right field in a three-run fifth.

In its third-inning outburst, Jersey Shore (2-0) was aided by four walks and two errors. Inter-Ac/Independents (1-1) notched its only run in the second, with August Dichter (Friends Select) knocking in Sean Hyland (Abington Friends) on a single to right.

In a 1 p.m. semifinal Monday at Citizens Bank Park, Jersey Shore will take on the winner of Saturday's quarterfinal between Delaware County and Mercer Park.

For Inter-Ac/Independents, Matt Kozemchak (Springside Chestnut Hill) went 2 for 2 off the bench. All nine of the squad's hits were singles.

In a first-round contest Thursday, Thaiss went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs as Jersey Shore, with four runs in the sixth, eliminated Chester County, 12-7.
