Football: Mitchell eyes Arkansas, Rutgers

Cedar Creek quarterback Damon Mitchell said Monday night that he was strongly considering both Arkansas and Rutgers as his college destination.

Mitchell, a first-team All-South Jersey selection who led Cedar Creek to the South Jersey Group 2 title game, said he might not make his decision until signing day on Wednesday.

"My mom and me are trying to decide what's best for me," Mitchell said after scoring 16 points for the Cedar Creek basketball team in a 70-69 loss to St. Joseph.

Mitchell committed to Georgia Tech in July but said he was unsure if the Yellow Jackets had withdrawn their offer. Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson has a policy of withdrawing offers if recruits make visits to other schools.

Mitchell also noted that Georgia Tech received a verbal commitment on Wednesday from Georgia high school quarterback Ty Griffin.

"I haven't heard from them," Mitchell said of Georgia Tech coaches.

Mitchell made a weekend visit to Arkansas and attended a men's basketball game against Tennesse.

"It turned my head," Mitchell said of his visit to Arkansas. "The campus is beautiful. The Arkansas fans are great. They support you all the way."

Mitchell said he also has been in regular contact with Rutgers coaches. He said Rutgers was the first school to offer him a scholarship, although that was as a safety.

He said Rutgers has made clear it's current offer is as a quarterback.

"I'm trying not to get too stressed out about it," Mitchell said. "I just want to talk with the people who care about me and make the best decision for me as a person and for my future."

Mitchell ran for 21 touchdowns and passed for 22 touchdowns last season. He was just the second QB in SJ history to go 20-20 in TDs after Mainland's Brent Caprio in 2008.

Mitchell also ran for 1,027 yards and passed for 2,025 yards. He was just the second QB in SJ history tio go 1,000-2,000 after Winslow's Bill Belton in 2010.
