Inspired by Art Museum's flair, Curtis' finesse, and ocean's fate

Gerry Lenfest on why he and Marguerite have supported the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Ocean Program, three of the biggest recipients of their philanthropy:

"Naturally, I like the art. . . . But I like not only what they provide for the public, but also the people who make it happen. The staff at the Art Museum and I and Anne d'Harnoncourt had a very close working relationship. I just enjoyed her so much. She was such a lovely person, and so bright. She brought me in more to an appreciation for what the Philadelphia Museum of Art does. So I guess it's the people and her influence.

"At Curtis, to hear the excellence of the students sort of draws you in. . . . The excellence is so great, they draw students from all over the world. And it's based solely on merit since it's tuition-free. It's produced some of the greats in the field of music, and it continues to do so.

"The Ocean Program - I was in the Navy, and we sail, and I've developed a great liking for the ocean. I think it's time to deal with the climate, and that we consider protection of the ocean."
