Sports in Brief: Fight sidelines Bulldogs duo

Two Mississippi State players caught on camera fighting in the stands at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu have been suspended indefinitely and sent home from Hawaii.

Renardo Sidney and Elgin Bailey, who are roommates, were involved in a fistfight after the Bulldogs' game Thursday night. The altercation lasted for several minutes before being broken up by teammates and coaches.

It's the latest in a string of issues for Sidney, a 6-foot-10 sophomore who was one of the most highly recruited players of the 2009 class. The NCAA ruled last March he had to repay $11,800 in improper benefits and sit out the remainder of the 2009-10 season and nine more games this season.

Mississippi State (8-4) plays Hawaii on Christmas Day in the Diamond Head Classic and then travels to Las Vegas to face St. Mary's on Wednesday.

At the Cancun Governor's Cup in Mexico on Friday, Mike Smith had 20 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, to lead East Tennessee State (5-7) to a 79-51 victory over Appalachian State (4-7), while Jonathan Lee scored 22 points, Chaisson Allen added 18, and Northeastern (4-6) rallied to pin an 86-78 loss on Texas State (3-9). Illness forced St. Louis coach Rick Majerus to miss the 5-7 Billikens' 69-61 loss to Mississippi (9-3) in the third-place game.

WNBA: The Turkish basketball federation identified the substance in WNBA standout Diana Taurasi's positive test as modafinil. Modafinil is used to counter excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, shift-work sleep disorder, or sleep apnea, according to the website for prescription drug Provigil, which contains the substance.

Taurasi, who has missed three games with her Turkish team, Fenerbahce, has been provisionally suspended pending the testing of her "B" sample in the first week of January. The Phoenix Mercury star is leading the Turkish League with 24.6 points a game.

Los Angeles Sparks guard Kristi Toliver has agreed to join Turkish club Samsun. Toliver, a backup, averaged 8.6 points and 2.2 rebounds this past season.
