Sports in Brief: Lochte's medal haul: 6 golds, 1 silver

Swimmer Ryan Lochte won three events in the short-course world championships Sunday and headed home from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with six gold medals and one silver.

Lochte started off with victories in the 200-meter backstroke and 100 individual medley, then pushed the United States ahead of Russia in the third leg of the 400 medley relay and celebrated as teammate Garrett Weber-Gale held on for the win.

Lochte won all five of his individual events, and six of his eight events overall. He failed to win a medal in just one event - the 400 freestyle relay on opening night, when the Americans finished fourth.

Lochte posted a championship-record time of 1 minute, 46.68 seconds in the 200 backstroke, 2.41 seconds ahead of American teammate Tyler Clary. The Floridian then won the 100 IM in 50.86, 0.05 off his semifinal time but still 0.83 ahead of runner-up Markus Deibler of Germany.

GOLF: Ernie Els won the South African Open for the fifth time, shooting a 6-under-par 63 to beat Retief Goosen by a shot in Durban.

COLLEGES: With a three-set sweep of California on Saturday night in Kansas City, Mo., Penn State (32-5) won its fourth consecutive national championship in women's volleyball.

Freshman Corey Robinson threw for 387 yards and four touchdowns, and Troy set a New Orleans Bowl scoring record with a 48-21 victory over Ohio (8-5) on Saturday night.

The game's MVP completed 23 of 29 passes for 285 yards and four touchdowns in the first half alone, when Troy (8-5) raced to a 38-7 lead.

SOCCER: Alex Ferguson became Manchester United's longest-serving manager on Sunday with his team topping the Premier League.

By extending his reign to 8,811 days, the 68-year-old Ferguson surpassed fellow Scotsman Matt Busby's record set during his two stints coaching the team.
