Margaret Trevethan, property manager

A Memorial Mass will be held Sunday, Feb. 19, for Margaret Mary Trevethan, 93, of Philadelphia, a retired telephone operator, insurance company employee, and property manager, who died of an infection on New Year's Day.

A Memorial Mass will be held Sunday, Feb. 19, for Margaret Mary Trevethan, 93, of Philadelphia, a retired telephone operator, insurance company employee, and property manager, who died of an infection on New Year's Day.

A longtime watcher of the Mummers Parade, Mrs. Trevethan died at Penn Hospice at Rittenhouse just as the parade was ending.

Mrs. Trevethan's Catholicism and patriotism - love of city, state, and country - were the cornerstones of her existence, her son said.

"My mother was born and lived most of her life in Philadelphia. She was very patriotic and proud of her city, a living example and ambassador for the City of Brotherly Love," said son David Uschmann.

Known to friends as "Marge," Mrs. Trevethan was one of two daughters born in South Philadelphia to Francis and Josephine Fennessy.

In 1941, she graduated from West Philadelphia Catholic Girls High School and was employed as a long-distance telephone operator for American Telephone & Telegraph Co., and later worked for the Insurance Co. of North America. Later, she managed rental properties on the Main Line.

She married Stuart Uschmann in 1949, and the couple had four children, whom they reared in Hawaii and Malvern. They divorced in 1971. He survives.

In 1974, she married Sidney Trevethan. The two lived in Philadelphia until his death in 2002.

Mrs. Trevethan gave to many charities to help the poor, the sick, and veterans.

"She saw the best in everyone she met," her son said. "She always went out of her way to help others, and was well-known for her kindness and generosity."

Her favorite pastimes were going to art museums, reading mysteries and poetry, going to the beach, spending time with friends and family, and eating sushi and chocolate ice cream.

In addition to her son, she is survived by children Chris Uschmann, Susan Jenkins, and Anne Walker; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a niece and nephews.

A Novena Mass, with special prayers honoring the deceased, will be said at 10 a.m. Sunday., Feb. 19, at Old St Mary's Church, 252 S. Fourth St., Philadelphia, Pa. 19106. Interment is private.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the church at the address above.
