John Albert Moberly | Chemical engineer, 89

John Albert Moberly, 89, of the Northeast, a chemical engineer who researched adhesives for Rohm & Haas Co., died of congestive heart failure at his daughter's home in Upper Darby.

Born in Pomona, Kan., Mr. Moberly worked with his father, who was a blacksmith for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway during the Depression.

World War II interrupted his college studies. He joined the Navy and was an ordinance expert and trainer in Norfolk, Va.

Shortly after being discharged, Mr. Moberly married Betty Mae Layman in 1947 and they raised seven children.

Mr. Moberly earned a bachelor's in chemical engineering in 1946 and worked in Rhode Island for U.S. Rubber Co. He took a job with Rohm & Haas in 1967, and was a researcher on polymers and adhesives.

Mr. Moberly grew roses, was a Philadelphia sports fan, and wrote short stories and poems. He also acted in community theater.

Mr. Moberly is survived by sons Larry, Warren, Jim and Raymond; daughters Pat, Jeannie and Jo; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother; and three sisters. His wife died in 1966.

A military burial was held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery on Wednesday.
