Soldier from Altoona killed in N. Iraq

Army Spec. Michael A. Hook and 13 other U.S. soldiers died in a helicopter crash Wednesday.

ALTOONA, Pa. - A soldier from western Pennsylvania who had ties to New Jersey was among 14 U.S. soldiers killed Wednesday when a Black Hawk helicopter crashed during a nighttime mission in northern Iraq, the Defense Department said.

Army Spec. Michael A. Hook, 25, of Altoona, had been in Iraq for almost a year on his first tour, said his father, Larry Hook, of Little Egg Harbor, N.J.

"He died doing what he wanted to do," Larry Hook told the Altoona Mirror. "But it's been pretty devastating."

After graduating from high school in Altoona in 2001, Hook lived with his father and stepmother, Belinda Hook, in New Jersey and worked doing odd jobs for about a year before returning to Altoona.

His mother, MaryAnn Hook, and his fiancée, Suzie Fetterman, both live in Altoona. Hook was scheduled to return from Iraq in September, and an October wedding was planned.

The Black Hawk was one of two helicopters that had just picked up troops after a mission when it crashed, according to Lt. Col. Michael Donnelly, a military spokesman in northern Iraq. The four crew and 10 passengers aboard were assigned to Task Force Lightning.

Military authorities said it appeared the aircraft was lost due to mechanical problems and not from hostile fire.

Hook enlisted in the Army about two years ago after working in Altoona for a roofing contractor, his father said.

"He just decided he was going into the Army, and I respected that," Larry Hook said.

Hook's unit, the 25th Infantry Division's combat aviation brigade, was expected to be back at its base in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, by late September, his father said.

Also killed in the crash, according to the Defense Department, were: Capt. Corry P. Tyler, 29, Georgia; Chief Warrant Officer Paul J. Flynn, 28, Whitsett, N.C.; Sgt. Matthew L. Tallman, 30, Groveland, Calif.; Spec. Rickey L. Bell, 21, Caruthersville, Mo.; Capt. Derek A. Dobogai, 26, Fond du Lac, Wis.; Staff Sgt. Jason L. Paton, 25, Poway, Calif.; Sgt. Garrett I. McLead, 23, Rockport, Texas; Cpl. Jeremy P. Bouffard, 21, Middlefield, Mass.; Cpl. Phillip J. Brodnick, 25, New Lenox, Ill.; Cpl. Joshua S. Harmon, 20, Mentor, Ohio; Cpl. Nathan C. Hubbard, 21, Clovis, Calif.; Spec. Jessy G. Pollard, 22, Springfield, Mo.; and Spec. Tyler R. Seideman, 20, Lincoln, Ark.
