Gov. Corzine and state transportation officials broke ground yesterday on a $5.5 million project that will widen the Berlin-Cross Keys Bridge and aim to reduce congestion linking the road to the Atlantic City Expressway.

The project will replace a four-lane bridge over the expressway with six lanes. The administration said the construction will spark other investment in the area.

"The Berlin-Cross Keys project demonstrates just how vital infrastructure investments like this are to boosting New Jersey's economy," Corzine said in a statement.

The widening project is the first of the South Jersey Transportation Authority's 2009 capital program.

Four lanes of the bridge will remain open during construction. Berlin-Cross Keys Road may close intermittently. - Jonathan Tamari
