Camden shelter gets help in paying its utilities

My Brother's Keeper, the Camden faith-based nonprofit group that houses and feeds homeless men with substance abuse problems, can now keep the lights on.

An Inquirer article last month detailed how the organization had a $12,675.51 debt to utility PSE&G that resulted to the gas being shut off at two of its three facilities. Electricity also was scheduled to be cut.

More than half of the money needed has been raised through small private donations, a $1,000 check from a Baptist church in Gloucester County and a charity tennis tournament last weekend, said Oscar Hernandez, the group's administrator.

The group still needs about $5,000 to repay its debt fully, he said. Anyone interested in helping My Brother's Keeper may contact the organization at 856-365-1332 or
